LP: Obama, McCain don’t get free passes on gun issue

Curiously, although the Gun Owners of America takes a much more hardcore position on the gun issue which is far more in line with the LP platform (yes, even after Portland and Denver), this press release quotes the much more milquetoastish, reliable Republican sycophants at the NRA instead. GOA created the F- category in its rating system specifically for John McCain.

Both candidates share questionable past on gun rights

Washington, D.C. – Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain both share a spotty history on gun rights and should not be granted a free pass with their recent rhetoric, says the Libertarian Party. “McCain and Obama are no friends to the Second Amendment, despite what they now say on the campaign trail,” says Libertarian Party National Chairman William Redpath.

“Both Obama and McCain have a history of anti-gun rhetoric and legislation,” says Redpath. “No matter how pro-gun their campaign rhetoric may be, they can’t erase their past statements and votes as Republican and Democratic gun-grabbers. While a conscientious change of heart on the issue is nothing to be ashamed of, Obama and McCain’s flip-flop on the issue of guns appears to be an obligatory, almost pathetic, appeal to a demographic to which they have never been faithful.”

In the past, McCain has taken heat for his involvement with the group “Americans for Gun Safety,” which the National Rifle Association (NRA) has called “neither nonpartisan nor a friend of gun owners.” McCain has a “C+” rating on gun issues from the NRA, who once called him “one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment.”

Obama, who in the past has supported legislation regulating the sale of handguns and other forms of gun control, has frequently stated on the campaign trail that the Second Amendment is an individual right–though one that can be regulated.

“Obama’s position on the Second Amendment is even more damaging than some of the positions McCain has taken on guns in the past,” says Libertarian Party Spokesperson Andrew Davis. “To call something a right, but at the same time saying it is a right that can be subject to ‘reasonable’ limitations, completely undermines the very notion of Constitutionally-protected rights. The Libertarian Party recognizes that there is a certain extent as to how far rights can go, but we shudder to think at what Obama might consider a ‘reasonable’ limitation.”

The Libertarian Party hailed the recent Heller decision in a press release issued yesterday. The Party opposes the prosecution of individuals for exercising their rights of self-defense. It also opposes all laws at any level of government requiring registration of, or restricting, the ownership, manufacturing, or transfer or sale of firearms or ammunition.

The Libertarian Party is America’s third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.LP.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom.

They probably don’t want to admit that the GOA exists because that organizations won’t speak kindly of Barr the way the NRA might…

I sent a letter to the GOA asking them about Barr back when he first bought the LP nomination – the response was that they hadn’t given him a current rating (but it was in the works) however his GOA rating when in congress was A-, and his record didn’t live up to that. The expectation was that he would probably get something less than an A rating, but no telling for sure.

B.O. is the LEAST qualified nominee in the 200 plus year history of the Democratic Party. You Disagree? Name ONE less qualified! And can you believe some “KOOKS” want to turn the nuclear football and the safety of mankind over to this novice? That’s INSANITY! Now it’s revealed he is tied to the Teamsters “dirty politics” also!

Does anyone think we need a POTUS “playing” with the Teamsters, other than the Teamsters?

Jaun (John McCain) McAmesty is the oldest nominee in Republican Party history. McSame is just another creepy old OLD Bob Dole 2 LOSER! He very easily could be senile, drooling on himself and in diapers within four years. A vote for him is INSANE also!

This year America look at ALL your alterntives! PLEASE! Dr.Chuck BaldWIN, Mr. Bob Barr, Ms. Cynthia McKinney, and Mr. Ralph Nader deserve a closer look by all of you. In the grocery store we have 50 plus brands of cereal to choose from, when it comes to one of the most important decisions in our lives WHY do we only have Ds and Rs to choose from? Why do we settle for such limits? Friends, the Ds and Rs have got us in the mess we are in!

Your vote belongs to you and whom you choose to give it to! Don’t fall for the “wasted vote” propaganda! The only wasted vote you will ever make is giving it to someone who really doesn’t represent your views and is only the “LESSER OF TWO EVILS”! And may we NEVER forget, the lesser of two evils is and always will be EVIL !!!

This is my argument to the masses on the major sites seen by millions. I hope all Third Party enthusiasts will put forth the effort to keep pressure on our mutual enemies. Victory in our time!
