Doug Guetzloe of the Florida Tea Party: ‘Perot Third Party Effort Cost Bush the Election Urban Myth Debunked’

The most telling empirical data is the following from the Institute of Election Analysis:

“In the Governor’s races, Perot’s voters cast 18% of their ballots for the Republican candidates; 56% of their ballots for Democratic candidates, 17% for independent candidates, and 8% did not bother to vote for Governor. If Perot’s voters had voted for Bush and Clinton in the same proportion that the voted for the Republican and Democratic candidates for Governor, Clinton’s lead would have increased by 7.5 million votes.”

Simply put, 56% of Perot voters voted for Perot and then cast their ballots for Democrats down the line. Only 18% of Perot voters cast ballots for GOP candidates meaning that if Perot had been out of the race – (by a margin of 38%) – Perot voters would have voted for Clinton – increasing Clinton’s victory by over 7.5 million votes.

“THIRD PARTIES SPLIT THE VOTE:” DEBUNKED.

This post talks about gubernatorial elections. I want to know which year? There aren’t many gubernatorial elections in presidential election years. I don’t believe there was any year in which only 18% of Perot votes voted Republican, but I can’t tackle that claim without knowing which year is being discussed, 1992, 1994, 1996, or what? Also why is there no link to this data?

Political scientists have documented that the 1992 Perot voters were successfully wooed by the Republican Party in 1994, and one analytical book says the Republican Party would not have won Congress in 1994 without that successful wooing.

  2. And in California ????????? .......... Lake

the word was that the lizard like Newt Gingrich (divorcing his first wife, his former history teacher, his high school instructor while he was in college ——— on her death bed ………..) literally converted (stole ????????) the We The People platform into the fakey dakey ‘Contract With American’ in 1994 ……….

truth or just another third party legend ???????

The year’s in question were 1992 and 1996. The question on the Gubernatorial races was 1992.
I can’t find any data anywhere to suggest that Bush would have won if Perot had not run. The very best you can find is a 38-38% distribution between Clinton and Bush. Clinton still wins.
Old wife’s tale and urban myths don’t count.

All Guetzloe is trying to do is add some legitimacy to his third party with the HIJACKED name. The reference to the Presidential election of 1992 is all academic and has no bearing on the 2010 election. He must know the statistics of third party wins, they aren’t good. After hearing his candidate, Peg Dunmire speak I doubt if he really thinks she has a chance to actually win. She couldn’t even come close to being given the Icaucus endorsement when she went head to head with other candidates. Conservative Republican Patricia Sullivan won that honor. What ever his motivation you can trust it’s nothing more than self interest. On the other hand Patricia Sullivan is the one true selfless candidate in this race. She is in it to help the people of the 8th District. Why? Simple, because she is a true patriot. Don’t forget the Florida Tea Party is not the tea party movement, it’s a dime store knockoff based on nothing except self interest of its leaders and candidates. Patricia Sullivan for Congress in the 8th District.
