LP.org blog: The Statue of Liberty after 125 years

By LPNY Chair Mark Axinn

Posted by Wes Benedict at LP.org blog:

Lady Liberty was dedicated at a ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland 125 years ago today after New York’s first ever ticker-tape parade.

She sits in a harbor approximately five miles from me and has welcomed millions and millions of immigrants to our shores since 1886.

Now under the Bush-Obama policies of the ICE Agency and the rest of DHS, she should cover her eyes in shame as the neo-cons destroy everything we once stood for. One Republican candidate actually openly stated that he would electrify the fence between the US and Mexico, no doubt so he could cook immigrants like pizzas.

Only the Libertarian Party deserves to proudly display the Statue of Liberty as our emblem. Let us not forget what she represents.

    Exactly 125 years ago, on a wind-swept island in the middle of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. Forget the fireworks and the pompous speeches. For the VERY best tribute that we could ever have given to commemorate this anniversary are the brave efforts of those hardy Occupy Wall Street participants, who are “standing watch” just a few miles away, ….and whose spirit is spreading all across the country!  If  Lady Liberty  could speak , she would surely say THANK YOU OWS. Thank you – for renewing and strengthening the ideals of freedom and dignity and liberty…upon which this great nation was founded. All Occupy Wall Street participants, whether in New York or elsewhere, should know and remember this one simple fact: With all the hardships and trials that you have been going thru—and will go thru—  you are in very real sense carrying forward the torch of freedom. Lady Liberty would be proud of you! ….WE are proud of you!

    Yeah, I guess he’s not quite “Herman Paul,” even with immigration being one of Ron Paul’s few relative weaknesses from a libertarian vantage point.

    By the way, won’t the electrified fences make it expensive to keep restocking the moat with alligators?

    I guess Cain has a new version of Emma Lazarus;
    “give me your tired, your poor, my alligators are hungry….”
