German Green Party Leader on Turkey Riots: “It was like a war”

The Green Party of the U.S. is currently carrying an article abou the German Green Party leader who was at the scene of the ongoing riots in Turkey on its website’s front page. An excerpt:

Turkish police forces have stormed the for more than two weeks of government opponents occupied Gezi Park in Istanbul. The security forces used again on Saturday night tear gas and water cannons.

According to the Turkish protest movement, hundreds of people were injured. The police have done their work with such a force in the war, criticized the Taksim platform that is one of the main organizers of the protests…

..Green Party leader Claudia Roth, who was in solidarity with the activists in Gezi Park, described the police deployment in dramatic terms. “We tried to escape and the police followed us. It was like a war,” Roth said. The people had been chased through the streets, the police had deliberately fired tear gas grenades at people.

The Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said hand of a smooth deployment. 29 people were slightly injured. “That was not even an intervention, there was an evacuation,” he says. “That was not even an intervention, there was an evacuation,” he said.
