Libertarian Party of Wisconsin: Response to President’s Call for Gun Control

Press Release:“After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it.” ~ William S. Burroughs

The Obama Administration claims to want to “end gun violence” with “sensible and common sense” solutions. “Who can be against common sense?,” asks Jim Maas, former Chair of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin. “However, we have yet to see a proposal which would have prevented a deranged shooter from using a government designated “gun-free zone” as a shooting range.”
But, they don’t claim to want to prevent mass murders by suicidal maniacs; they want to control guns, emphasis on the control part. Why is that? And, how would they achieve that goal, legally and constitutionally?
The options seem to be limited since our national government is prohibited from “infringing” on the right to keep and bear arms. Wisconsin has our own constitution. It limits gun laws in Article I, Section 25 which says “The people have the right to keep and bear arms for security, defense, hunting, recreation or any other lawful purpose.” “Any lawful purpose” could include self protection.
We are told we would only have to submit to “reasonable” laws, like the restrictions which were imposed on the citizens of Oregon. States can impose as many draconian regulations as their citizens will endure.
President Obama has stated, “no single law [and] no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence.” We agree.

Those who want to restrict the rights of others can not be influenced by logic and reason. The facts include:

  • Violent crime – including violent crime using guns – has dropped massively over the past 20 years.
  • Mass shootings have not increased in recent years.
  • Schools are getting safer.
  • There are more guns in circulation than ever before.
  • “Assault Weapons Bans” are generally ineffective.  For example, Connecticut has an assault weapons ban. (Interesting fact: the Newtown shooter left the AR-15 in the trunk during his rampage and used pistols in the school.)
Libertarians know we will not be safer by disarming our people. If Congress caves in to pressure, we should expect Wisconsin to protect the rights of Wisconsin citizens, according to the U.S. and Wisconsin Constitutions. The best sensible, common sense solutions are those from the local level, not from Washington.

I like to repeat that on February 7, 2015, Michael Bloomberg proposed prohibiting young blacks from owning guns. Google-search ‘Bloomberg guns young blacks’. One result is:

I am also fond of saying that I am not surprised that Bloomberg THOUGHT this. I am very surprised that he SAID this publicly.

Mike Bloomberg: Disarm Young Black Males
By Greg Richter | Sunday, 08 Feb 2015 10:35 PM
Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg is under fire for a statement made at the Aspen Institute on Friday in which he sounded like he wants the government to disarm young black men.

The Aspen Times first reported Bloomberg’s comments on Friday, and Twitter was soon abuzz.

During the event, moderator Jennifer Bradley, director of the Center for Urban Innovation at the Institute, asked Bloomberg how government can offer fairness to children “who have been failed.”

Bloomberg answered that 95 percent of murders are among minority males between 15 and 25. Cities must get guns out of the hands of this group and keep them alive, he said.

“These kids think they’re going to get killed anyway because all their friends are getting killed,” Bloomberg said. “They just don’t have any long-term focus or anything. It’s a joke to have a gun. It’s a joke to pull a trigger.”

Bloomberg is founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and has been criticized by gun rights advocates for what they say is an attempt to infringe on the Second Amendment.

His comments at Aspen also sounded racist to many observers.
    [end of quote]

This incident represents a head-on collision between two beloved positions of the liberals: First, let’s get rid of guns, and Second, let’s not discriminate.
“When an irresistible force meets an immoveable object, what happens”?

Bloomberg always did seem like a horse’s ass and that just confirms it further.

I will surrender my weapons only after the Secret Service gives theirs up and the FBI gives theirs up and all police forces give theirs up and all federal agencies give theirs up and all military weapons are parked offshore… well you get the picture. If THEY are convinced it’s safe then who am I to argue? Absent that they can go fuck themselves!

I finally listened to that song. I don’t think he has a hit on his hands! 🙂

I much prefer “Werewolves of London” by the late Warren Zevon!

    Good point.
