John W. Barclay was nominated by the Libertarian Party this week to run for House of Delegates in a February 7 special election for Virginia’s 71st District, which includes downtown Richmond.
Barclay is in a three-way race against Democratic nominee Jeff Bourne and Regie Ford, a Democrat running as an independent.
Barclay and his campaign supporters are knocking on doors in the district in the short window before the election.
Campaign manager Daniel Komline reports that Barclay has been networking with special interest groups aligned with Libertarians and has spoken at local LP events and with student groups at Virginia Commonwealth University.
All three candidates will appear together in a forum February 1 hosted by the Richmond Crusade for Voters.
Barclay advocates for community rather than federal control of education. As a math and science teacher for Richmond public schools, he says, “Virginia should look into not taking the money from the federal government so that we can be free from the culture of standardized testing.”
He advocates for ending the prohibition on marijuana and restoring the voting rights of felons, noting that Virginia is “one of the only states that strips felons of the right to vote for the rest of their lives.”
