Christopher Cantwell (SPLC file here), who tried but failed to get on the ballot as a Libertarian for US House in 2010, and has been kicked out of the Free State Project for threats of violence and off Free Talk Live for racism, has gathered unprecedented media attention in the last few days. Here is one of many examples, from the Young Turks show (H/T Gene Berkman):
Christopher Cantwell, who is seen in the documentary denouncing Jews and declaring, “a lot more people are gonna die before we’re done here,” has two outstanding warrants stemming from the rally where a counterprotester was killed last weekend.
Officials from the Virginia Commonwealth Attorney’s Office said Thursday that Cantwell is wanted for illegal use of gases, and injury by caustic agent or explosive. Both are felony charges, officials said.
The behavior in question was presaged by the following quote from Cantwell on the SPLC Hatewatch profile linked above:
“I think chemical and biological weapons can do a great deal of good for mankind. Releasing nerve gas or some kind of lethal virus into a left wing protest could prepare the bodies for physical removal without making a big scene for the cameras or destroying anything of value.” — Facebook post, January 28, 2017.
Heavy.com reports that
On August 17, Catnwell wrote on his website that he’s in an “undisclosed location just outside of Virginia, preparing to turn myself in to the University of Virginia police.”
“I was informed by the FBI that there is a warrant for my arrest there, presumably for the brawl which followed the torch march from Friday night,” Cantwell wrote. “I was uncertain if this warrant was real, since I had only heard it as a rumor until the FBI confirmed it last night. Right now I am seeking an attorney, and a trustworthy person nearby to hold onto my property. Once I have those things straightened out, I’ll be on my way to surrender myself.”
Cantwell confirmed that his YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts have all been closed. He also wrote that PayPal, the “most important part of my financial life,” has shut him out.
As of this time, “Christopher Cantwell” is among the top suggested google results for ch and can, and THE top result for chr and cant. Partially as a result of former Libertarian Party members Augustus Invictus and Christopher Cantwell having such prominent roles in the Charlottesville fascist “Unite the Right” march which turned to violence and murder, the Libertarian Party has reiterated its opposition to bigotry and racism which is contained in the party’s platform.
