Peace and Freedom Party: Solidarity with Wisconsin’s Workers and Students

The Peace and Freedom Party stands in solidarity with Wisconsin’s worker and student demonstrations. We demand:

* The Wisconsin Legislature kill the bill that would deny collective bargaining to state workers
* Governor Walker refrain from calling in the National Guard or police
* Education and union jobs are a right
* Cancel interest payments to the banks
* Tax the rich and their corporations

We applaud the workers and students of Wisconsin for leading the way in a “people’s filibuster” while Democrats hide out to deny a quorum to the Republicans.… Read more ...

Oregon Independent Party Legislative Nominee in November 2010 Set 80-Year Record

On November 2, the Oregon Independent Party nominee for State Representative, 48th district, polled 42.71% of the vote in a two-person race against the incumbent Democrat. The Independent Party nominee was Jeff Caton, a professional financial planner. More states elected independents to state legislatures this year than in any previous year in at least sixty years

Ballot Access News reports:

Thanks very much to Morgan Daybell for helping me find instances at which independent legislators were elected or re-elected last week. It appears that independents were elected to state legislators in 2010 in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Vermont. We are still waiting to see if one was elected in Colorado.

West Virginia State Senate passes bill cutting signature requirement in half

HB 2981 , which earlier passed the WV House, cuts the number of signatures from to 2% to 1% of the number of voters who voted for a given office in the previous election to get someone on the ballot for that office in an upcoming election.

The State Senate passed an equivalent bill today, and the legislative director of the Governor’s office assured Libertarian Party of West Virginia chair Matt Harris that the Governor will sign it into law.… Read more ...
