Wikileaks cables reveal American diplomats courting moderate Greens, critical of party’s left

From Stuff.Co.NZ (although not corroborated by another source, admittedly):

A discrete diplomatic lunch, a free trip to Washington and assurance of “assistance” from the US Embassy in Wellington have been used to blunt the Green Party’s “radical positions on many issues”, a leaked American diplomatic cable reveals.

The Americans seduced Green co-leaders Metiria Turei and Russel Norman, the latter with a free trip to Washington, and managed, over a lunch, to get a commitment from list MP Kennedy Graham “to turn (to the embassy) for any assistance he made need in the future…”

On the July 15, 2009, lunch between Graham and US mission head David Keegan, the cable said:

“The overarching purpose of the July 15 lunch was to establish the beginnings of a warm and respectful relationship with Graham,” Keegan cabled home.

The protest took place Saturday, February 5, and took place at United Nations Plaza in San Francisco. Starchild’s rough estimate is perhaps three or four hundred people were present. Starchild writes:

I encourage people to get these and similar images up on as many Libertarian and libertarian sites as possible, including LP.org, for LNC members who — unlike ordinary Libertarian Party members, shamefully — are the only ones currently able to post content to our national party website.

Starchild comments on a previous press release by the Libertarian Party supporting Julian Assange, Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks:

What paulie said — anti-TSA and pro-WikiLeaks! Both of these issues represent key tests of government power against civil liberties, one related to the First Amendment protections of freedom and speech and of the press, the other related to the Fourth Amendment protections from unreasonable search and seizure.… Read more ...

There are many alarming disclosures within the WikiLeaks documents which deserve scrutiny and further investigation. It is therefore all the more outrageous that instead of investigating what has been uncovered, the U.S. Government has, instead, focused its vast resources on an attempt to silence the alleged “whistle-blowers”.… Read more ...

It Is Treason To Call Wikileaks Treason by John Jay Myers

Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.  Now get over it.

You might believe some speech gives away national secrets, for instance how we prop up puppet dictators in foreign countries, or how we have been training troops who are now turning against us in droves, or how we are supplying billions of dollars to countries who supply those who want to attack us, or how we back companies that supply men with young boys for sex slaves in Afghanistan, or how the leaders of the countries we manipulate are now scared that we aren’t bombing Iran. … Read more ...

Ralph Nader testifies before Congress on the subject of Wikileaks

From the Talk Radio News Service:

Famed consumer advocate and ex-presidential candidate Ralph Nader (I) was part of a panel that testified on Thursday before the House Judiciary Committee to weigh in on the release of leaked classified U.S. military documents by the website WikiLeaks…

“What’s fascinating about this WikiLeaks controversy,” Nader said, “is that we have to avoid it becoming a vast distraction, [instead] focusing on these so-called leaks instead of focusing on the abysmal lack of security safeguards by the executive branch of the U..S government and making those who set up this poor system, or allow it to be penetrated, accountable.”

From PCMag.com:

Former presidential candidate and consumer advocate Ralph Nader argued that WikiLeaks has become a “vast distraction” from the real problems – the “abysmal lack of security safeguards” within the government and the lack of accountability among those who suppress data.
