Green Change: Dan Hamburg for Mendocino County (CA) Board of Supervisors

From GreenChange (by way of Green Party Watch):

Green Change endorses California’s Dan Hamburg for Mendocino County Board of Supervisors. His record of public service and passionate advocacy for Green values make him an exceptional candidate.

Mendocino County, a county the size of Delaware on California’s northern coast, is a rugged, beautiful area with numerous rivers, giant redwoods and farmland. As Supervisor, Dan Hamburg will bring vibrancy to the local economy and fiscal responsibility to government. His focus on conservation and sustainability will help preserve Mendocino County’s beautiful landscape for future generations.

Dan Hamburg has been active in his community for decades, both as a citizen activist and as an elected official. He served on the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors from 1981 to 1985, where he played a key role in passing forward-thinking, environmentally friendly policies. In 1992, he was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in California’s 1st Congressional District. In Congress, he worked for single-payer national health care, protecting old-growth forests, reducing the military budget and restoring fisheries. In 1994, the Sierra Club named him California legislator of the year.

Dan Hamburg’s resume as an activist is inspirational. His endeavors include joining an occupation in the Mojave Desert to prevent dumping of radioactive waste near the Colorado River, co-authoring a bill to protect old-growth trees in California, helping lead the campaign to pass the first ordinance in the country banning the production of genetically modified organisms, and fighting governmental harassment of medical cannabis growers. Since 1996, he has served as executive director of Voice of the Environment, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “educate the public regarding the transfer of public trust assets into private, mostly corporate, hands.” Voice of the Environment has led numerous successful campaigns to save public lands from being sold to corporations that would destroy their fragile ecosystems for short-term profits.

To foster a vibrant, sustainable local economy in Mendocino County, Hamburg would expand micro-loans and other incentives for entrepreneurship, institute preferences for county contractors and local products, and encourage local production of food and energy. He would take action to conserve water and fisheries and protect the coast from oil and gas leases, military weapons testing, and privatization schemes. He advocates for increased pedestrian and bicycle access and safety as a way to improve quality of life and property values, and he has pledged to take the same pay cut as county employees as part of his commitment to restoring fiscal stability.

Dan Hamburg is running a strategic grassroots campaign. He has a skilled, experienced campaign team. He is trying to raise $20,000 to fund his get-out-the-vote efforts, newspaper and radio ads. The non-partisan primary election is on June 6th. If no candidate earns more than 50% of the vote, the runoff election will be in November. We estimate that he will need 2,500 votes to place first in the primary election, and 4,000 votes to win a runoff election in November.

  1. Green Party fan

    Paulie,

Thanks for another outstanding Green Party story.

Dan Hamburg is a terrific Green Party candidate. Many of us are delighted to see Dan active and back on the ballot for the Green Party.

In other great Green Party news,

Latest opinion polls in Germany show the Green Party at record high numbers. The first German TV network ARD has the Green Party at 15 percent. Emid institute has the Green Party closer to 20 per cent.

The next German state elections are in the first week of May in Nordrheinland Westfalen. The Green Party there is also between 12 and 15 percent. That would mean the only possible two party ruling coalition would be a center right coaltion of the Green Party and the German republican equivalent party the Christian Democrats.

One final personal note, our friend and German national Green Party co-chairman Juergen Trittin had a heart attack last week in Berlin. Various reports indicate Trittin was rushed to the hospital, treated, and is now on the way to recovery.
