NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg To Campaign With Lincoln Chafee

Lincoln Chafee, the former GOP Senator turned Independent candidate for Governor of Rhode Island, announced a new endorsement today.

A statement issued by the Chafee campaign said: “Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, will travel to Rhode Island Thursday to deliver an endorsement to independent gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee. They will make joint appearances in Warwick and Providence between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with details to be announced on Wednesday.”

Chafee is in a close race with Democrat Frank Caprio. Bloomberg, of course, is the Independent mayor of New York City. Although he claims he has zero intentions of running for President or other office in 2012, Bloomberg has been unusually active in campaigning for candidates nationwide.

I was wondering if/when Bloomberg would start campaigning for actual Independent candidates when he came out in support of the Democrat (Sestak?) in Pennsylvania. This is a good sign. Hopefully he’ll make a habit of it.

There are a few options as far as viable Independent candidates that are close enough to his politics to endorse in 2010. Tom Horner, Eliot Cutler, and Charlie Crist immediately come to mind. However, Crist is stagnating a bit at the moment and Cutler is losing support.
