Green state rep. candidate Jeremy Karpen endorsed by Chicago Sun-Times

Posted below is the actual endorsement, along with a press release from the Jeremy Karpen campaign.

From the Sun-Times:

39th House District: Incumbent Democrat Rep. Maria Antonia “Toni” Berrios is known for not making waves; Springfield insiders say she does a decent job but nothing more. With an out-of-control state budget deficit and a distressed economy, that performance doesn’t cut it. Voters in this Northwest Side district should elect Green Party candidate Jeremy Karpen, a counselor and supervisor at the Mercy Home for Boys. Both candidates share fairly liberal views on taxation policy and education, but Karpen is far more independent, more progressive and has greater depth. There is no Republican running.

From the campaign:

CHICAGO—This morning, the Chicago Sun-Times endorsed Jeremy Karpen,
Green Party candidate for 39th District State Representative. Both
major Chicago-area newspapers have endorsed Karpen’s candidacy, and
Karpen is the first Green Party candidate to receive the Sun-Times
endorsement this election cycle.

The Sun-Times—which also endorsed Karpen in 2008—said the Green
candidate “is far more independent, more progressive and has greater
depth” than incumbent Rep. Maria “Toni” Berrios. Berrios, they noted,
“is known for not making waves; Springfield insiders say she does a
decent job but nothing more.”

"The Sun-Times and the Tribune don’t agree on much," said Karpen. “But
we all know that Springfield is broken, and I’m glad the papers see
eye to eye on electing a candidate that will bring an independent
voice to our state politics. I thank the Sun-Times for standing with
me again this year.”

The Sun-Times endorsement in this highly-contested race comes on the
heels of last week’s endorsement by the Chicago Teachers Union. The
union based their support for Karpen on what the CTU called his
"comprehensive plan to improve state funding and support for all
social services including education.”

To date, Jeremy Karpen has received the endorsement of the Chicago
Sun-Times, the Chicago Teachers Union, the Chicago Tribune,
Independent Voters of Illinois Independent Precinct Organization
(IVI-IPO), single-payer health care activist Dr. Quentin Young,
immigrant rights activist Jorge Mujica, and the support of the Chicago
chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America.
