Alaska Write-ins Top Number of Votes for Anyone on Ballot in U.S. Senate Race

Lisa Murkowski seems well-positioned to win re-election as a write-in candidate. The Alaska Elections Division reports [..] as of 9 a.m. Alaska time on November 3, [..] write-in 41.00%; Miller 34.20%; McAdams 23.74%; [Libertarian] Haase .54%; the two independent candidates .52%.

If Murkowski prevails, as now seems likely, she will be the first US Senator elected by write-in since Strom Thurmond in the 1950s. Incumbent Murkowski lost in the Republican primary to “TEA party” candidate Joe Miller. There was then some speculation that she might run as a Libertarian, but the Libertarian Party state committee voted against it and she denied that she had been interested.
