Patty Winsa, a staff reporter at The Star, reports that Sandra Finley, 61, was found guilty of not filling out her long-form census from 2006. Finley is a former leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party, and faces both jail time and fines for violating Section 31 of the Statistics Act.
Finley has objected both to the intrusive nature of the long form census questionnaire and to the Canadian government’s decision to farm out the census work to Lockheed Martin in 2003.
Josh Wingrove of the Globe and Mail covered the story as well, and points out that the new Conservative government has made the long form census voluntary. Unfortunately for Ms. Finley, the change in the law won’t effect her conviction, or possible sentence.
CTV also covered Ms. Findley’s case.
