Death Counter Reports Consequences in Mexico of United States’ War on Drugs

A most horrifying result of the U.S. war on drugs is widespread corruption, death and destruction in Mexico. An Educational Committee Regarding Death in Mexico Due to U.S. War on Drugs was formed by Steve Collett, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Congress, to dis-empower the drug cartels and protect our children from violence and the lure of drugs. This death counter has been created to bring attention to misery caused every moment we fail to change our policies.

The death counter was constructed based on the official calculation of 34,612 drug related killings in Mexico in the four years ending in 2010, as reported by Mexican officials according to Associated Press. The figure included 30,913 execution-style killings, 3,153 deaths in shootouts between gangs, and 546 deaths involving attacks on authorities. The counter adds approximately one death every 34 minutes, which is based on the 2010 death toll of 15,273.

These deaths in Mexico are the result of U.S. drug policies, which empower gangs, terrorists and drug cartels with obscene profits, in which every battle won simply increases the price of drugs, and each arrest merely opens up a slot with more lucrative economic rewards to the next dealer. Courageous efforts by U.S. drug agents, Mexican military and police cannot change the law of supply and demand. Law enforcement personnel are given impossible tasks, tempted with corruption and then left with insufficient resources to protect citizens from real crimes.

Drug addiction and abuse is a medical problem made worse by prohibition. Mexico is our neighbor. The Mexican people are our friends. The deaths are the fault of the United States. We can dis-empower the drug cartels by hitting them where it hurts the most, in the pocketbooks, without firing a single shot. Now is the time to decriminalize marijuana to protect all of us from the death, corruption, and wasted tax dollars caused by prohibition.
