An article from Jim Burns, Libertarian for President:
Many libertarians act as if they believe that the purpose and highest value of the Libertarian Party (LP) is democracy: Also, that the LP should speak with one duly elected voice. Many believe that the reason for the lack of success of the LP is sometimes a Libertarian “spokesperson” is perceived as a kook, screwball, and/or creepy and thereby has destroyed the message of the LP. Additionally, there are some who want to water down, “mediate, mitigate, mollify” our message.
I offer an alterative view.
I believe that the purpose of the LP is to implement Libertarianism*. To achieve that objective the LP should act as a vehicle to facilitate, as much as possible, the actions of libertarians so that there are more activities and not less to promote libertarianism: that means that there should be more approaches to our problems — many will likely fail – so be it!
I want a libertarian spokesperson on every corner: That will increase the odds that there will be some who will give the appearance of a kook, screwball, and/or creepy (Democrats and Republicans have them too). I believe that the reason that the LP is not as successful as we desire is because we do not know how to do it, yet. More people trying and more things and methods tried will enhance the chances of increased success and even victory.
I ask that we think outside the box: Because what is in the balance is far too important for inaction or even limited action. Let us think and act to find and implement success for the LP. Let me know what you think and I have ideas that I would like to share.
