I’ll be at the California convention this weekend, as will Gary Johnson. I haven’t confirmed an interview with him, but I did hear back from someone in his campaign, and I plan to pursue it at the convention. So, IF I’m able to catch a few minutes with Mr. Johnson–what would you like for me to ask him?
Since he likely will be the nominee I would ask him if he thinks any of his rivals are good running mates. If so, which ones?
I hope he won’t select one of his rivals. My choice would be Carla Howell.
My only argument against Carla would be that we’d lose her from the DC Office. Otherwise, I’d second that.
But that’s getting away from the topic of the post… Q’s for Gary:
Q: With all the speculation about the #NeverTrump republicans voting for a Libertarian nominee, do you have plans on trying to woo Trump supporters?
Make sure to ask the “if you lose, would you be willing to run as VP” question to Johnson as well, since I’ve seen read it put to Petersen (answer: maybe, if they can put up with me) and McAfee (answer: no Johnson/McAfee ticket).
Some more:
Would you keep Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as-is?
Should the Federal Government enforce labeling of GMOs?
Do you consider the ISIS treatment of Yazidis and Christians a genocide? Does the United States have any responsibility to help?
Since your 2012 run, you seem to have done an about-face on the subject of Sharia law:
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/05/10/165093/gary-johnson-sharia-not-a-problem/
What is the reason for this change, and on a related note, what is your opinion of noted Islamaphobe and warmonger Frank Gaffney? Are you willing to publicly condemn him and his delusional demagoguery, or do you believe his ideas have merit?
Q: Along with banning Burqas, will you ban Habibs as well?
Q:: Will you ban Punjabi salwar kameez’s since they cover the entire body and some women wear their scarves in the same manner as the habib?
Q: Since your stated reason for banning the Burqa is to insure that the woman beneath has not been abused, will you also ban American women from wearing large sunglasses inside of buildings to hide their black eyes?
Q: Will you also ban heavy concealer makeup that American women use to cover their abuse bruises?
Q: Will you make domestic abuse on ALL women more of a crime than it is now?
Q: Why are you so afraid of Muslims practicing the rules of their religion (aka Sharia Law) than you are having other religions do the same thing. (i.e.; dab of ash on the forehead on Ash Wednesday, no fish on Friday, eating only kosher foods, giving up something for Lent, etc.)?
Q: will you denounce the Trump and Cruz publicly for suggesting we commit war crimes (i.e.; carpet bombing and killing the families of terrorists)?
Q: Will you uphold the separation of Church and State and not pass any laws that that are based on a person’s religion? (i.e.; not allowing Muslims into the country)
OK That’s a start. You can probably roll those all into one big question. BTW, I will be there this weekend too.
I’d ask about tax policy. A Guaranteed Minimum Income ala’ Milton Friedman, an Administration that instead of adding layers of government through legislating, instead consolidated and streamlined Govenment. And since Government is never going to fire people, where would the DEA agents go? Perhaps Immigration and Border Patrol? How about a 21st Century Bill of Rights to codify our Privacy rights, and maybe a guaranteed Right to BASIC healthcare via a voucher type program?
Considering that you never pardoned or commuted anyone convicted of non-violent drug crimes, and Obama has… would you say that Obama is a better libertarian than you are?
What is your position on the law protecting big pharmaceutical companies from almost all liability vis-a-vis vaccine injuries? Should that law be repealed?
What executive actions would you take to make sure that illegal aliens are not taking federal welfare benefits (either “legally’ or illegally)?
Q: During your 2012 presidential run, you incurred approximately $1 million in campaign debt which has not yet been paid off. If I were to donate to you today, would that donation go toward funding your 2016 campaign or would it be used to pay off the old debt?
Q: If elected would you try and overturn Roe – v- Wade? Followup, would you allow the states the right to punish either the mother or the provider if they had anti-abortion laws in their state? Would you then use the full force and power of the federal judiciary to fight anti-abortion laws in states that pass them?
Q: What is your policy when it comes to widespread cellular phone tapping? Currently the alphabet soup of agencies plus local and state authorizes deploy devices known as Stingrays that scoop up all the cell activity within in a radius of the device. They do not target a single person but all people. Will you continue to allow such widespread eavesdropping without a warrant?
Q: Would you support the return of federal land (BLM) back to the states?
Q: Do you support the efforts to divide the state of California into two or three states?
Do you still advocate for the armed invasion of Africa by US armed forces in order to assassinate the military warlord Kony?
Rebel Alliance,
“Q: During your 2012 presidential run, you incurred approximately $1 million in campaign debt which has not yet been paid off. If I were to donate to you today, would that donation go toward funding your 2016 campaign or would it be used to pay off the old debt?”
I asked him a very similar question in person on Saturday. He explained that it would fund the 2016 campaign. The old debt is owed to a campaign advisor who does not expect it to be repaid, and the FEC has been slow to recognize the discharge of the debt.
I got a similar answer when I talked to Governor Johnson last week. Based on my reading of the FEC documents, his explanation that the campaign consultants were funding the campaign makes sense.
I think the biggest problem with doing things this way was that instead of seeing expenses for travel, ads, promotional materials, signs, bumper stickers, etc, there is just an invoice (or invoices) recorded from the consulting company. The FEC has already slapped the campaign’s wrist over this, to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars. This included the return of quite a lot of matching funds.
I would hope that if nominated this year the practice of not recording line items would be avoided. I would also like to see a heck of a lot less in attorney fees. Everyone is ignoring the attorney fees, which in themselves almost equal several previous campaign’s entire budget!
Kyle: ” The old debt is owed to a campaign advisor who does not expect it to be repaid, and the FEC has been slow to recognize the discharge of the debt.”
Kyle, are you sure that you are being precise in reporting what you heard? You appear to be saying that the debt is _all_ owed to the campaign manager (or his company).
Stewart, for 2012 line items are somewhat out there. You need to look at the PDF forms of schedule D in the first and second amended filings. But perhaps you did and just want more detail.
George,
I didn’t record his exact words, and it is now nearly a week later, so I make no claim to precision. But I did walk away with the sense that there was friendly agreement among all parties to discharge the debt; it would not be a drain on the 2016 campaign. I haven’t read any FEC documentation.
Here is the actual list of debtors, which is well longer than “owed to the campaign manager”.
