Howard Schultz, former Starbucks CEO, coming to Purdue Thursday to talk presidential race

The Journal & Courier reports on an upcoming event at Purdue University, hosted by Perdue President Mitch Daniel:

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, will be at Purdue University Thursday to make what The Washington Post reported would be “a major policy address” leading up to the possibility that he might make an independent run for president.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels on Tuesday morning confirmed that Schultz would be on campus Thursday. Daniels told the J&C that Schultz reached out to Purdue about the event.

The talk will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Fowler Hall, a 388-seat venue in Purdue’s Stewart Center. Seating will be limited “to invited and ticketed members of the university’s governance councils,” according to Tim Doty, a Purdue spokesman.

A livestream of the talk will be shown in Loeb Playhouse, which is down the hall in Purdue’s Stewart Center and has 1,038 seats.

The format for the event — lecture, Q&A with Daniels or straight-up rally —  wasn’t immediately specified by Purdue or Schultz’s team.

Schultz has been a center of attention after saying he was considering an independent bid in 2020. Some Democrats have blasted his strategy of going for moderate voters, saying that a third-party candidacy would siphon votes from a Democratic nominee and help President Donald Trump win re-election.

In the past week, Schultz has criticized both Trump and candidates lining up on the left, insisting that he could win the White House by going for American voters disaffected by the partisan fighting from both sides.

“I am certainly prepared for the cynics and the naysayers to come out and say this cannot be done,” Schultz told The New York Times. “I don’t agree with them. I think it’s un-American to say it can’t be done. I’m not doing this to be a spoiler.”
