Jill Stein challenges Hillary Clinton to debate after ‘Russian Asset’ smear

  • “It’s past time to give the American people the real debate they deserved in 2016.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday made the baseless claim that Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party’s 2016 nominee for president, was a Russian agent—an allegation that was met with derision from Stein and an invitation to debate.

“In light of the latest slanderous allegations from Hillary Clinton, I challenge her to a debate,” tweeted Stein.

In light of the latest slanderous allegations from @HillaryClinton, I challenge her to a debate. It’s past time to give the American people the real debate they deserved in 2016, but were denied by the phony DNC/RNC-controlled Commission on Presidential Debates. https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1185198706016112640

Hillary strongly implies that Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian asset who will act to serve the Kremlin’s interest. Also says there’s no doubt Jill Stein is. Does she have evidence for these grave accusations? Of course not. None is needed in Dem Party discourse. It’s gutter trash. https://twitter.com/AaronBlake/status/1185196559941722113

“It’s a shame HRC is peddling conspiracy theories to justify her failure instead of reflecting on real reasons Dems lost in 2016,” Stein added.

Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump, made the comments in an interview with David Plouffe on his Campaign HQ podcast.

“She’s a Russian asset,” said Clinton. “I mean, totally.”

The former secretary of state also claimed that Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), a hopeful for the Democratic nomination in 2020, was compromised by Russia.

Hillary Clinton doesn’t just predict the Russians will support Tulsi Gabbard as a third-party candidate; she also calls Jill Stein “a Russian asset — I mean totally.”

“She’s the favorite of the Russians,” said Clinton, who also claimed that Gabbard is being set up to run third party. “They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far.”

The comments didn’t sit well with Noah Schachtman, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast.

“I hope Hillary has solid evidence for this,” said Shachtman. “Otherwise, it’s an incredibly fucked up thing for someone of her stature to just blurt out.”

According to The Washington Post, Clinton has yet to back up her remarks:

Clinton did not provide any evidence for her claim, though a spokesman later insisted to CNN, “This is not some outlandish claim; this is reality.”

Progressives responded to Clinton’s conspiracy theories with ridicule.

“Hillary’s comments about Tulsi just make totally clear how ridiculous the Russia conspiracy crowd has become,” saidjournalist Krystal Ball.

Grayzone journalist Aaron Maté called Clinton’s comments “vile” and centered them in the context of the broader narrative of Democrats smearing opponents as “Russian dupes.”

“The delusion runs deep,” said Maté.

As The Intercept‘s Glenn Greenwald pointed out, Clinton herself is no stranger to conspiracy theory slurs.

“This is on the level of those who accused Hillary of murdering Vince Foster and running a drug ring out of that Mena runway,” said Greenwald. “It’s unhinged and shameful—but completely in line with standard Democratic tactics.”

Yes, it’s ridiculous to claim that Jill Stein or Tulsi Gabbard are Russian assets. Just as it’s equally ridiculous to claim that the Russians had anything to do with electing Trump.

Of course, progressives had no problem with Trump being smeared with baseless conspiracy theories involving Russians.

I’m surprised anyone can still honestly believe Agent Orange (Trump) is not colluding, but OK. I guess I shouldn’t be.

There was a comment by (I think) Socratic Gadfly in this thread. Who trashed it and why? And I don’t see it at all anymore, even in the trash.

There does seem to be evidence that Jill Stein has had contacts with the Putin administration – as NBC news notes Stein “…has been a Kremlin favorite since her first run as the Green Party’s presidential candidate in 2012. She has regularly appeared on Russian state-owned television, including RT, and famously sat across from Russian President Vladimir Putin at a 2015 gala dinner.”

A3P presidential candidate Merlin Miller met with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the 2012 election. I guess that makes him an Iranian asset. Ridiculous reasoning.

I’ surprised that you’re apparently surprised that POTUS, or any POTUS, collaborates and colludes with foreign agents…

Clinton is elevating a nobody like Gabbard into a viable 3rd party candidate that would be just viable enough to potentially hurt the Dem candidate in the general. If you’re looking for a Rooskie asset in a manchurain candidate conspiracy, then that asset would be Hillary Clinton. She’s the Angela Lansbury character. No one has played a more pivotal role in ensuring the electability of a manchurian stooge like Trump.

Ron Paul often appeared on RT, as have other libertarians, such as author J. Neil Schulman.

I like RT and Al Jazeera. They provide air time to Americans who are largely shunned, if not outright censored, by Western media.

Sad, though, that Americans must look to foreign media to supplement their news diet.

    I’m not.
