As the White House seeks authorization from Congress for illegal, aggressive war by the United States, polling continues to show that the majority of the American people oppose the use of our military to “punish” the Syrian government. Meanwhile, members of the Green Shadow Cabinet are working in concert with others in the peace movement to turn public opinion into political consequences.

Ben Manski, the Green Party candidate who lost his bid for a West Side Madison Assembly seat to Democrat Brett Hulsey last year, has great ideas for opening up the political system and correctly identifies the existing redistricting process as “an incumbency protection racket.”
But on the collective bargaining issue, Democrats are on his side, and the current conflict should not be about “building any party at the expense of progress,” he said.

After voting last month to approve a moratorium on chain restaurants in Point Richmond, city council members voted 5-0 last night to deny a permit to open a Subway restaurant in Point Richmond, saying that it was not compatible with the quaint and historic nature of the neighborhood, which is protected in the city’s General Plan…
Later in the evening, the council turned its focus from the issues facing one neighborhood to the national stage, and adopted a resolution “to free democracy from corporate control.”
Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, who proposed the resolution, said the bill called for state and federal constitutional amendments to reject corporate personhood—that is, the idea that corporations deserve the same rights and protections afforded individuals in the constitution—and corporations’ ability to spend freely in elections.
