Independent Candidates for Governor Gaining Traction in the Northeast

Two recent articles out of Maine and Washington D.C. highlight the independent gubernatorial campaigns of Eliot Cutler in Maine, Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island and Tim Cahill in Massachusetts. At the Portland Press Herald, Matt Wickenheiser writes:

RI: Poll Shows Independent Chafee Ahead in Governor’s Race

From Jim Taricani at Turn to 10:

A Brown University poll released Tuesday shows that former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee is ahead of his possible opponents for governor.

His Democratic opponents are Frank Caprio and Patrick Lynch. John Robitaillie is the only Republican in the race.

If Caprio wins the Democratic primary, Chafee would beat him in a general election with 33.8 percent of the vote to Caprio’s 28 percent and Robitaille’s 12 percent, according to the poll.

Ending several weeks of “exploration” into whether he would run for the job, former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee announced Tuesday night that he is an independent candidate for governor of Rhode Island.
