Underdog group within the UFT union proposes interesting voting strategy

In New York City, the United Federation of Teachers union declined to endorse a candidate for Mayor. Though, a group within the UFT, called ICE, has made an interesting endorsement: They ask members to vote for anybody on the ballot, except incumbent Mayor Bloomberg. Because there are 8 candidates on the ballot — including 5 running solely on a third party line — that endorsement should help the numbers for third parties.… Read more ...

The article below by Elizabeth Benjamin at the Daily News reports a list of candidates who have already filed for Mayor on independent/non-automatic-ballot-status-third-party lines, and notes that petitions are expected from Green Party candidate Reverend Billy (William Talen). Two Socialist Workers Party members are launching mayoral campaigns in major cities in preparation for looming 2009 municipal elections:

NEW YORK—The Socialist Workers Party here has nominated Dan Fein, a sewing machine operator, as its candidate in the 2009 mayoral race. James Harris, a union meat packer, is the SWP candidate for mayor in Los Angeles.
