[Traficant] served as Sheriff of Mahoning County from 1981 to 1985 and in 1983, was charged with racketeering for accepting bribes. Traficant, who represented himself in the criminal trial, argued that he accepted the bribes only as part of an “undercover investigation” into corruption.

Traficant Considers Filing In Two Districts, Decides On One

James Traficant, the former Congressman and inmate from Ohio, has officially decided to run for his old congressional district, the 17th of Ohio, which is now occupied by his former aide, Rep. Tim Ryan (D). He had considered running in two separate districts, but has apparently abandoned the idea.

Former Rep. James Traficant (D-Ohio) will run for Congress again as an independent.

Traficant, who was convicted on bribery and racketeering charges in 2002, did not say which district he would run in but confirmed to CNN’s Kyra Philips he’s making a return to politics.
