Cindy Sheehan and Matt Gonzalez at Socialist Event

The Socialist Alternative has an event notice on their website about the “Northwest Socialism Conference”. Attendees include former Green Party San Francisco Supervisor and Vice Presidential candidate to Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez. Other invitees include Cindy Sheehan, an antiwar activist and independent congressional candidate in 2008.

The American people elected Obama and the Democrats who promised to challenge Corporate America’s control over our country.

The decline of the San Francisco Green Party

Both the Wall Street Journal and the San Francisco Bay Guardian have pieces today concerning the declining stature of San Francisco’s Green Party since early last decade.  They are very interesting – even if they are somewhat discouraging – and well worth a read.

Ross Mirkarimi in the news

Ross Mirkarimi is one of the most successful, powerful Green Party politicians in the nation.  He has been elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors twice, succeeding Green Matt Gonzalez in 2005, and was recently appointed to a powerful land use commission by the California State Senate.  On his website, he lists some of his accomplishments as a legislator:

  • Plastic Bag Ban: First-in-the-Nation ban on plastic bags in chain grocery stores and drug stores, which sparked similar legislation around the world from Oakland to Canada to Paris to Beijing.

A profile of Matt Gonzalez

The San Francisco Chronicle’ Kenneth Baker recently conducted an interview with Matt Gonzalez, Ralph Nader’s Vice Presidential running mate in 2008.

In 2003, former Supervisor Matt Gonzalez narrowly lost the San Francisco mayoral election to Gavin Newsom. He has moved on, but many of his supporters apparently have not, still referring to him affectionately – out of his hearing at least – as “Mayor Matt.”

Ralph Nader, Cindy Sheehan, Matt Gonzalez and several hundred more attend memorial for Peter Camejo

Big-name liberal activists-including Ralph Nader and Cindy Sheehan-celebrated the lifelong activism of late UC Berkeley alumnus Peter Camejo Sunday at the International House.

Camejo, who ran as Nader’s vice president in 2004 and was seen by many to be a major figure of the American left, died of lymphoma, a type of cancer, on Sept.

Live streaming and moderator set for debate between Bob Barr, Chuck Baldwin and Ralph Nader

According to an email from the Baldwin campaign,

The City Club of Cleveland debate, moderated by Dan Moulthrop of Cleveland’s PBS radio and television stations, will be streamed live by ideastream (http://www.wviz.org/).

Time and place set for debate between Bob Barr, Chuck Baldwin and Ralph Nader

As IPR already reported, there will be another debate between the alternative Presidential candidates who are listed on enough state ballots to win the election, to take place tomorrow.

Gonzalez returns to San Francisco area to campaign

San Francisco’s CBS5.com reports, “In a historic national presidential campaign that has shunted third-party candidates from the spotlight, San Franciscans may have forgotten that one of their own is making a bid for the vice presidency.
