Ballot Access News: Reconsideration Requested In Michigan Socialist Party Ballot Access Case

On May 28, the plaintiff in the pending federal Michigan ballot access case, Matt Erard,filed for reconsideration in U.S. District Court. The chief issue is whether Michigan unconstitutionally discriminates against newly-qualifying parties, relative to old parties. The number of signatures required for new parties to get on the ballot is approximately twice the number of votes needed for old parties to remain on the ballot.… Read more ...

Michigan Socialist Party Launches 2012 Petition Drive

At the end of May 2011, the Socialist Party launched a petition drive to get itself on the Michigan ballot. Probably 2,000 signatures have been collected so far. The law requires 32,261 valid signatures. However, the law also required already-qualified parties to poll only 16,083 votes in November 2010 in order to stay on the ballot.… Read more ...

Socialist Party of Michigan Asks for Reconsideration in Ballot Access Case

On August 25, the Socialist Party of Michigan asked for reconsideration in its ballot access lawsuit, Socialist Party of Michigan v Land, in Ingham County Circuit Court. On August 18, the judge had ruled that the party had filed the case too late. The brief for reconsideration points out that Michigan can’t start printing its November ballot yet anyway, because the lawsuit over whether the Tea Party should be on the ballot is still unresolved.… Read more ...
