The Socialist Party has petitioned onto the Vermont ballot this year. It is the first time since 1952 that the Socialist Party has appeared on the Vermont ballot. The seven statewide nominees each needed 500 signatures, and they gathered them successfully.

Austin Cassidy reports from Uncovered Politics that former Socialist Party USA Presidential candidate Brian Moore is running for Governor in Florida. Moore is not, however, running as a Socialist Party candidate. Rather, he’ll be participating in the Democratic Party primary.

It appears that Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan, has a connection to the Socialist Party. No, she’s not a member–she wrote her senior thesis on the party’s history in New York City from 1900-1933.
A history major, Kagan traced the rise and fall of the Socialist Party in her hometown in a senior thesis titled “To the Final Conflict: Socialism in New York City, 1900-1933.”
CNN is running a story currently in which the Socialist Party Co-Chair shares his thoughts about the Obama administration thus far. The resounding answer from the card-carrying Socialist Party members is, he isn’t one of them.
But Wharton, co-chair of the Socialist Party USA, sees no reason to celebrate. He’s seen people with bumper stickers and placards that call Obama a socialist, and he has a message for them: Obama isn’t a socialist.

Mississippi Governor Signs Bill Setting a 5 p.m. Deadline for Presidential Elector Paperwork
On March 19, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour signed SB 3058. It sets a 5 p.m. deadline for presidential elector paperwork. The old law set the deadline date, but not an hour. This bill only came into existence because of the 2008 incident at which the Secretary of State’s office rejected the paperwork for Brian Moore, Socialist Party presidential candidate.
