Rochester, NY Special Election for Mayor: Green Party candidate receives 9%

Unofficial results show Green Party candidate Alex White finished third with 9% of the vote in the special election for Mayor of Rochester NY. White, a small business owner, ran a spirited campaign that was based on strong ideas.

From the Democrat & Chronicle:

White, 47, took pride in garnering more than 2,000 votes, saying it was about as he expected and it “gives us something to build on.”

Independent, Green Party, and Tea Party candidates set to shake up Western New York district special election after Republican Congressman resigns in sex scandal

Following the sex scandal driven resignation of Republican Chris Lee in NY-26, Scott Walker’s prank caller Ian Murphy (see previous IPR story) is described by Steve Peoples at Roll Call as “likely to capture the the Green Party ballot line” according to state Green Party co-chairman Peter LaVenia:

“The local out in western New York has talked to a number of different candidates, and they forwarded the recommendation,” LaVenia said.

Former Philadelphia Green loses special election for state representative, as a Republican

The former vice chair of the Green Party of Philadelphia, and their 2007 candidate for city commissioner, Lewis Harris recently lost a special election for state representative, getting six percent of the vote in a two way race.  He ran as a Republican.

Green Party in Rochester, NY reviewing multiple applications for mayoral candidacy

From the City Newspaper:

The Green Party of Monroe County has received “several” applications from people interested in running for Rochester mayor on the Green Party line, says party co-chair Scott Brant. Citing confidentiality and respect for the applicants, Brant would not give a specific number. He did say that he is “thoroughly impressed” by the quality of the applicants…

With little risk, I think we can assume that two of the applicants are likely former Mayor Bill Johnson and Rochester businessman Alex White.

LP blog: Libertarians appear in two special elections in Georgia

On May 11, there were Libertarian candidates in two special elections for State Senate in Georgia.

David Montané ran in District 42, getting 7.5 percent of the vote against two Democrats and an independent candidate.

Brandon Givens ran in District 49, getting 8.1 percent against two Republicans.
