Socialist Party USA to hold Ann Arbor organizing conference

Michigan’s Ann Arbor Press reports that the Socialist Party USA will hold an organizing conference in Ann Arbor starting Friday. Presidential candidate Brian Moore “will conduct one of the workshops planned for the three-day event.”

The conference will include “more than 15 workshops on subjects like ‘Rescuing Lenin from Leninists,’ ‘Marxism 101’ and ‘How open source/free software can revolutionize our Socialist organizing efforts.’ Moore will conduct a workshop on ‘The role of ballot access in our electoral strategy’ and on the anti-war movement.” Eric Chester, a three-time candidate for the SPUSA presidential nomination and the party’s 1996 vice presidential nominee, is among the other speakers.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to intend.

I planned to get my work done ahead of time so that I could leave. I have recurring work that’s due Friday afternoon and then Saturday evening.

Ironically, the work in question: A weekly recap of the stock market and three stock analyses!

I have friends involved with the SP of Michigan. Good people. I don’t agree with their politics, but if they do another petition drive to get on the ballot in Michigan, I’ll help them out like I’ve done before.

I also enjoy having a beer with the SP folks. They are very passionate and combine that with some beers, we have some very lively discussions.

    ‘Rescuing Lenin from Leninists,’

Oh, lodee, must we? I think it’s best if we leave Leninism to the M-L authoritarian wing of socialism. Let the little sectlets have him.

I must say, Mr. Moore’s is the most active SPUSA campaign for president I can remember in my voting life time (since 1977)?

I’m going to try to attend this and report.

This would be a good opportunity for SP-USA to reach out in solidarity to some of the other socialist parties (Socialist Workers; PSL; Peace and Freedom; etc.). Even if there isn’t much chance of a single, unified socialist party, there should be at least a loose, cooperative coalition.
