New Mexico State Senator Jacob Candelaria has switched his registration from Democrat to Independent (or what NM officially calls “decline to state”).

GOP Gubernatorial Candidate, Former Gary Johnson Advisor Switches to Libertarian Party in New Mexico

Retired Albuquerque teacher and ultramarathon runner Tim Walsh announced he was running for governor of New Mexico earlier this year. He initially declared as a Republican, but has switched over to the Libertarian Party in recent weeks.

Walsh was born in North Dakota and lived for a time in Minnesota, where he worked in patient account services for the Mayo Clinic and served as a city councilman in Lake City, Minnesota.… Read more ...

New Mexico Legislator Quits GOP, Becomes Independent

New Mexico state representative Phelps Anderson split with his own party in a vote last week on the repeal of a 1969 law that criminalized abortion.

The Republican sided with seven Democrats on the legislature’s House Health and Human Services Committee in casting his vote to repeal the long-dormant abortion ban.

Libertarian National Committee Passes Resolution on Gun Rights and Watch Lists

Gun-Rights-AdvocatesAfter being requested by the Libertarian Party of Colorado, through its Regional Representative (this IPR editor, Caryn Ann Harlos), the Libertarian National Committee joined Colorado (and now the Libertarian Party of New Mexico and the Libertarian Party of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana) in passing the following resolution:

WHEREAS, Libertarians affirm that self-defense is an inherent human right;

WHEREAS, the Platform of the Libertarian Party opposes all laws at any level of government restricting, registering, or monitoring the ownership, manufacture, or transfer of firearms or ammunition;

WHEREAS, the Platform of the Libertarian Party affirms the right of due process and denies the legitimacy of “victimless crimes”;

WHEREAS, the government has steadily encroached upon these rights by illegitimately regulating and restricting access for firearms and ammunition and may further seek to deprive people who have been convicted of no crime of their inherent right to full self-defense by denying their civil and inherent rights to obtain firearms and ammunition;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Libertarian National Committee opposes any policy which would deny access to any firearms or ammunition to any person simply for being placed on any government watch or no-fly list and reaffirms its call to repeal and oppose any existing or proposed firearm and ammunition regulations.… Read more ...

Johnson Polls 5% in New Mexico

The Albuquerque Journal conducted a presidential poll in New Mexico just twelve days before the election. Former two-term Governor and Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson received 5% in this poll.
