Among the California newspapers running obituaries of Peter Camejo this morning are the Contra Costa Times, Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, and San Jose Mercury News.
In his three Green Party campaigns for governor of California, Camejo received 5.3% of the vote in 2002, 2.8% in the 2003 recall election, and 2.3% in 2006. He received 465,650 votes for vice president of the United States in 2004 as Ralph Nader’s running mate.

Like I said; he will be missed on the Left because he was so well reasoned and well spoken. Him and Nader were a dynamite combo in ’04. Even in ’76, as a Trot, he still made a lot of sense. Almost had me! Except for the SWPies “turn to industry”, and their expulsion of much of the YSA for smoking pot. Trotskyites are not usually as onerous as the CP or the Maoists, or the Hoxaites (Hoohaaites we called them), but still, not so much friends of liberty. The Freedom Socialist Party is the “best” of the bunch, imo.
Also the media fascist with the Nazi San Diego Union Tribune [now on the auction block] and [just as bad] North County Times [Daily] down here in the border lands in TJville………..
Camejo always conducted himself as a gentleman, that is why.
It’s pretty amazing that this guy seems to be so well-respected among ideological opponents, etc.
I met Camejo in 1976, when he was s till a Trot and running for pres on the SWP line, my grandfaterh was a member of the party for awhile, and Camejo came through KC, MO tht year for the protests at the GOP con. Even though I was only 17 at the time, I could tell he seemed out of place with the zombies of the SWP; too well spoken and too intellectual for that outfit. The US Left will miss him, we don’t have enough well spoken reasoned voices.
There is another good piece on Camejo written by Dan Bacher on the Indybay website. It can be found at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/09/13/18537560.php or on the Peace and Freedom Party website at http://peaceandfreedom.org/
I remember watching this guy in the Recall Debates. He was one of the only guys that was actually debating anything of substance.
But it was Huffington and Schwarzeneger’s scuffle that stole the headlines. -.-
