House Clerk reports 2008 federal election statistics

Ballot Access News reports that the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives has released “Statistics of the Presidential and Congressional Election” for 2008. BAN says the booklet, available in full online, “uses arbitrary standards” on vote totals. (Please view the BAN link for details.)

That said, by the House Clerk’s reckoning, Libertarian candidates for U.S. House (running under the party label, not as independents or without party affiliation) received a total 1,083,896 votes in 2008, Greens 570,780, Independence Party 300,108, Working Families 294,299, and Constitution Party 136,021. “Independent” candidates received 729,798 votes, while “Other Party” candidates received 684,355.

By party, the booklet offers these presidential popular vote totals, which again differ from other tabulations due to labeling methodology: “Independent” 739,165, Libertarian 515,447, Constitution 177,162, Green 157,521, Socialist Workers 7,491, Socialism and Liberation 6,818, Socialist 4,787, Reform 4,629, Prohibition 653, “Other Parties” 59,483.
