Tom Condit, presente!
I have very sad news to convey. Tom Condit has been very ill recently, and he went back in the hospital a few days ago. His life ended at 1 am this morning, 9 January 2009. He turned 72 last June, and he dedicated much of the last 42 years of his life to the Peace and Freedom Party, as his way of fighting for peace, justice, and the rights and needs of the working class.
Tom Condit was involved in countless organizations over the course of his life, including unions, peace groups, civil rights groups, socialist organizations, and study groups. He was a dedicated environmentalist before the word even came into use. He ran for office several times, most notably as the Peace and Freedom Party nominee for State Insurance Commissioner. He was an invaluable resource person for Peace and Freedom Party activists, and his wide reading and careful study of many subjects was freely shared with anyone who asked. I could go on and on, but this is a short announcement. Much more will be written about Tom’s life and work soon, for other forums.
A brief graveside gathering will be held next week, but the day is not yet set. In June, sometime close to Tom’s June 17th birthday, a large memorial meeting will be held. It will be widely announced well ahead of time.
Tom had intended to spend the next ten months working hard on the campaign of his wife, Marsha Feinland, for US Senate as the candidate of the Peace and Freedom Party. Marsha assures me that her campaign is going strong, and though she will need a little more help than usual in circulating her in-lieu and nominating petitions this next couple of weeks, everything is on course.
Those wishing to make a donation in Tom’s memory may make it to Feinland for Senate, at 2217-1/2 McGee Street, Berkeley CA 94703. Tom’s friends understand that this was indeed his dearest cause. Tom often quoted Joe Hill in circumstances like these: “Don’t mourn, organize!” Well, his many friends will mourn him, but it will not stop us from organizing toward the socialist future to which Tom dedicated much of his life.
