Jim Burns’ plan to defeat Harry Reid

Email from Jim Burns:

Dear Paul,

I discovered the Libertarian Party (LP) in September of 1973.
By January of 1974, I was elected chairman of the LP of Nevada.
To build the party we had to invent and discover everything.
One thing we believed would build the party was to run a candidate:
That was not then legal. What I did was I legally changed my
middle name to Libertarian and ran in the Republican primary
for the then statewide office of US Congress. The word Libertarian
was on the ballot.

Another thing we believed was that communications both internal
and external were elementary and essential. A way to communicate
was to publish newsletters and in so doing I learned about a
delivery system: the US Mail.

In 1978, I ran for the Assembly. I came in second in a three-way
race beating the Republican. I did three mailings that increased
my vote total by approximately three times more than the
average LP Candidate.

In 1994, I ran for the Assembly. I did not do as large a mailing
but with the smaller mailing, I still came in second in a three-way.

In 1996, I ran for Congress (not statewide). This time I did a mailing
but only to Republicans. I mailed 10,000 and I have good reason to
believe, I received approximately 1,500 more votes (most of these
votes would have gone to the Republican) because of that mailing.

What I suggest we do to stop Harry Reid is mail postcards only to
Democrats. The postcards should support an anti-war candidate:
Such a candidate exists. I can get such postcards:
Addressed with postage.

What I need is partners and customers. I need partners to sell
these postcards to people who want Reid defeated: I will split
my share with them: Ready to mail postcards seventy-five
cents each plus delivery cost. If you want Reid defeated and
you are willing to put your money where your mouth is, I sell
ready-to-mail postcards for sixty-five cents plus delivery.

If the election is close and this election should be, then major
advantages of this system of influencing the election are that
it is not part of any campaign or campaign committee and not
subject to reporting and spending limits, and because you put
the postcard in the mail yourself (anonymously), you do not
have to trust that your money will be spent wisely. There are
also other races that we could influence.

Sincerely,

Jim Burns

    A new one:

    Dear Paul,

I believe that the actions of Senator Harry Reid
harm the people of our country.

I want Harry Reid defeated. I am willing to put my
effort into this project. I have designed a method to
achieve this end. I have good reason to believe that
the election may be decided by a few hundred votes.
If a few hundred votes that would have gone to Harry
go to a candidate of a minor party, then Harry will be
    defeated.

If we send postcards to only registered democrat voters
asking them to vote for a candidate from a minor party,
some of them will do so. To be successful, we need to
persuade a small percentage of these voters to vote for
a minor party candidate: These are votes that would have
gone to Reid, therefore, reducing his vote total. I have
    designed such a postcard.

My cost for postcards, printed 2 sided, addressed to an
active registered democrat voter, and with attached 28 cent
postage stamp is 50 cents each: that is ready-to-mail (An
additional cost that must be paid is delivery cost).

A cheaper way is to do most of the work yourself or with
friends: My cost for mailing labels with the name and an
address of an active registered democrat voter is 3 cents
per label. I will send you a postcard. You may shop around
and get the cheapest price for printing copies of my postcard
of the same or better quality. Have the postcards printed; buy
the US postcard stamps (28 cents each); buy the labels from me:
place the labels and stamps on the proper location on the postcard:
    then post them.

I want Senator Reid defeated. So, I will sell at my cost the first 50,000:
Buy it either way: 50 cents each or 3 cents for labels. Buy them for yourself
or if you know someone, who does not like Harry, show them the postcard,
tell them the plan, and sell them the postcards for whatever you can get
    above your cost.

Send me your US mailing address and I’ll send you a sample postcard.

    Sincerely,

    Jim Burns

What is the purpose of strategy if you don’t have a candidate with a plan so people can discuss those other solutions?

People don’t want more baby talk or doomsdayer verse. People want real solutions. If Burns had real solutions, then let real solutions be his calling card. Let the people hear his ideas for a better Nevada, rather than a parlor trick mailer.

  3. David Colborne August 9, 2010

NewFederalist – Tim Fasano from the IAPN is running for Senate against Reid and Angle; on top of those three, we also have “Tea Party” candidate Jon Ashjian and a number of non-partisan independents.

Knapp – Long story short, yes, the Nevada LP is interested in running candidates for public office, which is why we have a candidate running for Governor, along with several local offices. The majority of the Nevada LP’s membership, however, decided they are not interested in Jim Burns being one of those candidates.

Knapp, you don’t have a clue: “………. so it is people like you that scare me when you actually go out and vote ……….”

Lake: Yep, like Space Cadet Captian Coty Banks Quirk, every one gets one vote. Hey you can always write in ‘Mickey Mouse’ ………

How’s Quirk Boy doin’ these daze? Any thing interesting happening? Any legal problems?

How’s that INDEPENDENT Political Report on line funding raising goin’? The donations will be going to ‘improvements’ and or ‘routine up dates’ and or ‘regular operations and maintenance’, ………huh?

  5. Thomas L. Knapp August 9, 2010

    David,

I cannot speak to the question of whether or not Jim Burns is the best of all possible candidates.

Based on his public statements, etc., though, he does seem to be a libertarian.

And, like you said, the choice the LP Nevada had was Jim Burns or no candidate at all.

Is the LP Nevada interested in running libertarians for public office, or isn’t it?

If Jim Burns is bad, so be it — let the bad be the enemy of the worse.

  6. NewFed, NewFed: what language!

‘Follow me folks, I’m right behind you’

‘Phuque Yew” (destroying old growth forest!)

‘Shake N Bake’ (fire in a high rise during a trembler!)

any way, Nevada’s IAP? Ask IPR commentator delux and ether net know it all Space Cadet Captain Coty Banks Quirk.

Where is Quirk Boy? Where’d he go? What’s him doin’? Why is he no longer a commentator?

Why is he a divorced mormon? Why did he leave the [FORMER] Constitution Party cradle of California’s American Independent Party? Was it a happy, joyful leaving? [And for whom.]

Why did INDEPENDENT Political Report hold it’s first on line fund raiser in May 2010? And do the contributors REALLY know what the monies went to, where they ended up at?

Tis a puzzelment —- and boy is that Don Lake an ignorant, dumb SOB! (Hey Mom and Dad were married —– eventually!)

    Inquiring minds ………..

  7. Robert Capozzi August 9, 2010

tk: Not only is [Reid] relatively ineffectual as Senate Majority Leader…

me: Based on the legislation that’s passed the last 2 years, I can’t say I see it that way. Hard to say how things woulda gone if Durbin was Maj. Leader.

I’d agree Angle sounds like a trainwreck. However, one trainwreck that adds to gridlock would be a relative win for liberty, most likely. Gridlock is the best we can “angle” for unless and until there’s a fairly major consciousness raising for peace and liberty. A slow-speed wreck seems preferable to a high-speed one in the meantime.

  8. NewFederalist August 9, 2010

While Burns does seem to be quirky at best, is there no minor party nominee in the race? Did the IAP decide to not hurt Angle’s chances to unseat Reid? If the choice is only going to be Reid or Angle then that is very sad indeed. Reid could phuq up a wet dream and Angle is nuttier than squirrel sh!t.

  9. David Colborne August 9, 2010

Knapp – As someone who was at Nevada’s LP convention back in February, I can state with a fair amount of certainty that the LP’s “refusal” to run a candidate had very little to do with Wayne and far more to do with people’s opinions of Jim Burns, who was the only volunteer that ran for the Nevada LP nomination. To put things into perspective, if a candidate is NOTA’d (“None of the Above” gets a majority) in the first round, there’s a second round in which the candidate can run again and in which other candidates may nominate themselves. After Jim Burns was NOTA’d in the first round, no other candidates nominated themselves for the office. Furthermore, after Jim spoke in support of his campaign in the second round, clearly defined as the only senate candidate available to the LP-Nevada, his vote total decreased in the second round of voting.

Was Wayne in favor of Jim Burns? Not even slightly, but I don’t think that mattered much. Honestly, when you manage to lose votes by speaking in your defense, that’s a pretty bad sign.

  10. Boy you don't have a clue August 8, 2010

@9, I am as close to the horses mouth as you can get. I can verify, Mr. Knapp, you don’t have a clue. You don’t know the whole in’s and out so it is people like you that scare me when you actually go out and vote.

  11. Thomas L. Knapp August 8, 2010

Reid’s bad, but at least he’s a known quantity.

His continuing presence in the US Senate probably benefits the Republicans more than it benefits the Democrats. Not only is he relatively ineffectual as Senate Majority Leader, but he’s a great punching bag — Republican candidates nationwide love running against Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi in preference to running against their actual opponents.

Angle’s bad, too, and we don’t know how bad. The available evidence seems to indicate that she’s stupid, crazy and evil, but in what proportions, who knows?

And there the LP sits with its thumb up its ass, refusing to run a candidate because Wayne Allyn Root doesn’t want to get in the GOP’s way.

  12. If I knew for sure August 8, 2010

If I could be sure that he could still votes away from Reid that wouldn’t vote for Angle then I have no problems. But I am not sure that is going to be the case.

  13. Burns an idiot August 8, 2010

He will for sure get Harry Elected if he keeps going on this path.

  14. paulie August 7, 2010

I think Burns is angling for write-in votes for himself. Just a guess.

  15. George Phillies August 7, 2010

You can’t beat someone with no one, and “The postcards should support an anti-war candidate: Such a candidate exists. ” is remarkably obscure as to which candidate Burns is trying to elect.

The Republican at one point spoke up favorably for alcohol prohibition, and appears to be a Palin imitation. For which candidate are people supposed to vote, if not Reid?

  16. LibertarianBlue August 7, 2010

    My question is;

Where are all the anti-war Democrats? They seemed to for the most part gone silent.

  17. Michael H. Wilson August 7, 2010

He’s damn right about direct mailing working.

  18. paulie August 7, 2010

    Followup email from Burns today

    Dear Paul,

“If you ASSUME you make an ASS of U and ME,”
That was a lesson they tried to teach me when I was
a police officer in Washington DC in 1968.

I assume that you agree that Majority Leader Senator
Harry Mason Reid should be defeated if we wish to at
least maintain what liberty we have. To liberty Harry
is as a bull in a China shop.

Senator Harry Reid acts as if he has never seen a
government program he does not like, and he acts
as if he loves to spend other people’s money.

Senator Reid supported and supports the illegal
    actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Harry supported the bail-outs and buy-outs of banks,
    investors, and car companies.

He wants to compel a “cap & trade tax”

He is the arrogant architect of the “health care program.”
That program may produce total national government
    control: you know “ObamaCare”

Trillions of dollars in deficits are supported by Harry.

What makes him more harmful than your average politician?

What makes him more harmful than the Republican in this race?

Harry Reid is the Majority Leader of the United States Senate.

He is in large part responsible for the current state of affairs
of the growth and new powers of the politicians and bureaucrats.

If anyone else wins, they will not have the power Reid has and
a message is sent that he should have learned from the former
Majority Leader Senator Tom Daschle and that is there should
be a price to pay for being two faced. Neither was elected as
    a flaming liberal progressive.

He is not stopping, 7-24-10, Las Vegas, Senator Harry Reid
said, “I wish we had a public option, but we are going to have
a public option, it is just a question of when.” The “public option”
is politicians and bureaucrats in total control of medicine.

8-4-10, More, Senator Harry Reid said about ObamaCare:
“Once you explain what’s in this bill, the American people
of course like it. The more people learn about this bill the
    more they like it.” Really?

Somebody, please – please stop him.

So, I agree with what is written on many signs in Nevada:
    “Elect anyone butt Harry Reid.”

The Republican, Sharron Angle is weak. She does not have the
courage of her convictions and she has not done what she must
do and that is to make the issue the record of Harry Reid.

Do not send one penny to Angle

The supporters of Reid went on the direct mail attack against
Angle just after she won the primary. Angle went from ahead
by 7% after the election to on 7-17-10 behind by 7%. Direct
mail works! The newer poll 7-28-10 is Reid 43% and Angle
42%. The race should be tight.

To increase the odds that Reid will be defeated, we should ask
Democrat voters to vote for an anti-war candidate. (Reid’s record
is pro war) We should mail postcards to only Democrat voters.
The postcards should support an anti-war candidate: Such a
candidate exists. I can get such postcards: Addressed with postage.

Your help is needed. We can stop him.

I’ll send you a sample postcard.

  19. To defeat Harry Reid August 7, 2010

I believe even though some might not agree is to vote Sharron Angle. Then we would have to figure out what to do later. We cannot divide the votes. Reid will get into office again, and that is very seriously bad for Nevada.
