Johnson to TPM: Not Running as a Libertarian

Via Talking Points Memo:

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson — the Republican candidate for president best know for rarely but memorably appearing on a debate stage — tells TPM that he’s sticking with the GOP, despite reported calls from Libertarians that he switch teams.

“I intend to stay in this as a Republican,” Johnson said via text message Tuesday.

Good for him. If he wants to join our party, he should join, establish credentials as an activist, and then seek to run in some future cycle.

We’ve already had one round of a complete carpetbagger coming in, using his funds raised in large part for the benefit of his good friends in his original party, and then bail.

1gp, apparently, GJ is not a carpet bagger. Would you be more positive about GJ if he made a Shermanesque statement about limos: if offered a limo, I will not take one, even at no expense to the campaign or the party. I will also answer any and all inquiries about our FEC filings within one week or less. 😉

Gary Johnson is a two-term Republican *Governor*.

If he runs as a Libertarian next year, he will have switched party affiliation less than a year before the nomination, the very definition of carpetbaggery in action.

I don’t blame Mr. Johnson, although I’m disappointed. I’m sure he’s planning on running again in 2016, or 2020.

4 gp, hmm, not sure you mean “carpet bagger,” but it appears that GJ has dual citizenship, unless AS is mistaken.

7 jcj, really? In a disjointed sample of this thing called the LP, it’s extraordinary that you proclaim him the frontrunner. And suggesting that GJ wouldn’t take the nomination is almost as absurd as saying RP wouldn’t. IMO.

I agree, but I’m only slightly disappointed. I never thought it was likely that GJ would run as a Libertarian anyway. But far unlikelier things have happened in politics.
