Pennsylvania Petition Challenge – Volunteer Call

From a message posted to the Pittsburgh LP email forum:

Volunteers Needed In Philadelphia August 20-24, 2012

On August 1, 2012, the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania submitted nearly 50,000 petition signatures to get Gary Johnson and Judge Gray on the ballot in Pennsylvania. Only 20,601 signatures were required so we qualified for ballot access and as of now Gary Johnson will be on the ballot.

However, on August 8, 2012, our petitions were challenged by those we believe are associated with the Republican Party, who fear Gary Johnson will draw votes away from Mitt Romney this November.

In the first stage of this challenge, there is an allegation that 26,000 petition signers were not registered to vote. While there are no grounds for this statement, the Court has ordered the Libertarian Party to supply a minimum of 20 individuals each day commencing Monday, August 20, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to check all 26,000 signatures at the Board of Elections to verify whether they are registered voters. If we don’t have those volunteers, we cannot defend this challenge and Gary Johnson will not be on the ballot in Pennsylvania.

The Commonwealth Court Order reads (in part) as follows:

The review [of more than 26,000 signatures] will take place at the Philadelphia Board of Elections, 520 N. Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19123-4295 and shall be conducted under the supervision of Court personnel with the assistance of City of Philadelphia election employees, with the objective of stipulating to the validity or invalidity of these signatures. Review of challenged signatures will begin on August 20, 2012, at 8:30 a.m… Each party shall have present 20 individuals…who are capable of performing computer searches utilizing the SURE system. City of Philadelphia election employees will instruct these individuals on how to conduct searches on the SURE system. The signature review will continue between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday until further order of the Court…”

I call upon all who can make it to Philadelphia the week of August 20-24, 2012 to volunteer to help. I will be there all five (5) days. It would be very helpful if volunteers can participate for multiple days, but even one day will be highly appreciated.

The Volunteer Coordinator for this effort is Roy Minet, He can be contacted at 717-898-6142 (any time of the day or night) or . He will provide you with more details about how to get to the Philadelphia Board of Elections at 520 N. Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19123-4295 and with respect to parking and lodging issues. Please contact anyone else who may be able to help.

This is an opportunity for you to obtain valuable political experience while at the same time doing something important to help keep Gary Johnson on the ballot in Pennsylvania.

If you have any general questions about the current ballot access crisis or about the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania, do not hesitate to contact me personally.

@12: Now that is quite wacky. Thanks for that, I hadn’t tried going directly to

  2. If all else fails round up and line up about 100 homeless people and tell them you’ll pay them AFTER the job is done. The Gov’t drones might call it off after spending time with a room full of unbathed homeless people. I would love to send them to the people who challenged this. In this case PAYBACK would be sweet !!!! And to think some of you still want to think most Rs are the “good” guys in the FRAUD duopoly ! Bull, they just want control of the White House so they control and handout and have the cushy overpaid jobs for the next 4 years while our Republic continues down the sewer!.

Jokes aside the 20 people don’t necessary have to be LP members, just someone willing to do the job. So you might can hire some help if needed.

Can anyone on here truthfully say Romney was a better Gov. than Gary Johnson ? No WAY ! Gary Johnson is handsdown the BEST candidate in this race. The citizens of PA and all states deserve the right to vote for the BEST, most qualified candidate in this race, Gov.Gary Johnson. I truly believe Gary Johnson could do a GREAT job as POTUS……

    Hey Laura,

    Now that is truly strange.

If I follow the Google link to the “Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania”, it takes me to that music site.

If I type in in the address bar, it goes right to the Pennsylvania LP page.

See if this direct link via IPR works.

@4 Marc: what do you think is the best way to donate right now? A google search for “LP Pennsylvania” takes me to which redirects to a place to download music. Think it’s best to reach out to Tom?

Isn’t up to the challengers to comb over petitions and point out the ones they think our invalid?

  10. Marc Montoni Marc Montoni August 15, 2012

@2 JamesT, be sure to slide the LPPA some bucks towards the legal fund, if you can’t help out directly.

Fricking sons of bitches! If they keep GJ off the ballot in Penna. there needs to be some payback.
Maybe having Libertarians register as Republicans and run in primaries espousing the most outlandish and wildest views possible to completely tarnish whatever Republican brand the establishment types are pushing.

  12. JamesT JamesT August 15, 2012

It’s too late for me to get off work & help but best of luck to those that can volunteer.

The Constitution Party of Pennsylvania is in the same boat. They sent out the following request for help:

The Constitution Party of Pennsylvania has been challenged in the Court of the Commonwealth by Republicans on the validity of our ballot access signatures. The court has ordered that we have a large group of volunteers (20 minimum) to assist in the checking of names and addresses with their database this coming Monday morning in Philadelphia. This could take several days and we need lots of help lined up since not everyone will be able to stay the full time. Can you help us out? If you think so, please contact Donna Fike via email at: and provide her with your phone# so that she can call and work out arrangements with you. Several of us are carpooling and getting rooms to share for lodging. Please advise us if you would like to be included in our arrangements.
