MY POSITION ON “CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE”:
Civil disobedience (without violence) is a tradition going back to the colonial days. Look at what civil disobedience has brought about in civil rights, ending the Vietnam war, –and look at Gandhi in India (I lived during that era in India and witnessed it firsthand)—and calling attention to various injustices.
Libertarian candidate for governor, Mr. Wyllie’s stunt was just silly in my opinion. Driving is a privilege, not a right. If he seriously believes that people should not have driver licenses or any rules (financial responsibility or insurance, DUI, etc.) then we had all better get some armored cars to protect ourselves.
“Civil disobedience” is what you do when there is an injustice or a stupid law and you want to demand change. If Mr. Wyllie wanted serious civil disobedience, he should have rallied a bunch of people to smoke weed in a park, and he would have gotten more media mileage, too.

Well, we’ll certainly have to strongly disagree that deregulation and cutting taxes only enriches the 1% and impoverishes the 99%. Government does a lot more to help the rich and hurt the poor and middle class than vice versa.

Note to opposition candidates: focus on pointing out the flaws of the establishment, not your colleagues.

I agree.

I disagree. The right to travel should not be subject to a license. Roads should not be monopolized. Road owners could require proof of competence in driving, though.

It’s not really as obvious as some people think it is that the government monopoly revenue collecting/human cattle monitoring scam of “drivers licensing” does anything to increase road safety. And even if it does, that doesn’t mean that there are not other serious issues with the way coercive monopoly government goes about it – there most certainly are!

Mr. Khavari is free to smoke weed in a park as a form of civil disobedience if that is the issue he finds most compelling. He should not tell other activists what is important to them.

Maybe so, but the point of civil disobedience is not only to do a media stunt. Mr. Khavari’s conclusion cheapens and takes away from a strong opening here.
