The Green Party’s Twitter account sent out the following message to supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders who today ended his campaign for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination:
Early in his political career, Sanders was a member of the Liberty Union Party in Vermont. He was elected Mayor of Burlington as an Independent in 1980, elected to the House of Representatives as an Independent in 1990, and elected to the US Senate as an Independent in 2006.
His unsuccessful 2016 candidacy for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination brought mainstream exposure to him and his brand of Democratic Socialism. Then-presumptive Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein offered to step down and award him the Green Party’s presidential nomination, which he declined. Instead he endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. In the general election, over five percent of the voters in his homestate of Vermont cast a write-in ballot for Sanders.
In the aftermath of Sanders’ 2020 run, there are rumblings the Green Party would grant Sanders their presidential nomination if he so desired. Nevertheless it seems Sanders will most likely endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
Labor activist and party co- founder Howie Hawkins appears to be the current frontrunner for the Green Party’s 2020 presidential nomination.
I added some detail about Sanders’ involvement in third parties and the Green Party potentially nominating him for president if he so desired.
Bernie himself will sheepdog again, of course.
Most Berners who have talked about “Bernie or Bust” will either follow his sheepdogging or stay home, protestations to this point to the contrary.
Some are already sneering on Twitter. Trust me, I’ve gotten it personally.
