October 2023 Third Party News and Open Thread

As part of our mission to promote awareness and meaningful discussions on emerging political parties and independent movements, the Independent Political Report editorial team hosts a monthly open thread. This thread serves as a single space for readers to share news, opinions, and stories about third parties and independent candidates that may or may not be covered elsewhere.

We kindly request that readers adhere to our Civility Policy. Please refer to the website’s footer for a comprehensive list of current policies. A picture link to the Monthly Open Thread can always be found in the side section of the site.

Jeff, per my piece, RFK Jr. won’t have as serious of ballot access hurdles as the typical indy candidate.

He’s got money to spend in states that allow paid signature gatherers. He’s got the Kennedy name to bank on to help more. With Waterkeepers, etc., he has some experience with initiative-type petition drives already.

And, his stance on environmentalism and other fracking issues was held long before he burst on the scene as an anti-fracker. If he really did abandon that to do the Libertarian run, he would, per one of the tags on my blog, indeed be Just.Another.Politician.™ (First invented by me for Dear Leader, the guy who used to be Biden’s boss.)

Plus, remember, that he’d just be running for the Libertarian **nomination.** No guarantee he would get it. As an independent, he’s running for **president.**

George, Jordan, I’ll offer right now 3-1 odds AGAINST RFK Jr. making a Libertarian run.

Dave Weigel at Semafor had a piece today on an RFK candidacy that talked about the possibility of a Libertarian nomination. Consensus seems to be that he’d draw more from Trump than Biden, which is probably correct. His appeal is to an anti-vax, conspiracy theory crowd.

@Michael: The reality is that Prilosec (sic) and Charlie Kirk think RFK Jr. as independent (and yes, that’s NOT the same as a third-party run) is actually a Democrat plot. Updated my blog post per that Mediaite new piece of yesterday.

The only thing funnier than that is the fallout from the McCarthy vote. Bannon thinks Crenshaw has been “crushed” and Gaetz is calling Chip Roy a RINO. To which, on Twitter, Roy has essentially invited him to a fight. (Gaetz would be a dead man.)

Potential new third party out there (at least in the Tertium Quids vein). The following Republicans in the House voted against tabling a motion on ousting McCarthy as Speaker. They’re having an hour debate and then vote.

Biggs, Gaetz, Good, Crane, Rosendale, Burchett, Buck, Mace, Mills, Spartz, Davidson

Running as independent and running as a Libertarian Party candidate are not the same thing.
