The Communist Party USA announced on Tuesday that it will be convening in Chicago later this year for its 32nd National Convention.
The party announced the convention date in a statement on its official website. As of this article, the specific venue for the convention has not been named, but delegates are scheduled to convene in Chicago from June 7, 2024, to June 9, 2024.
“All members are called to participate in the process of deliberation that will shape the party’s strategy and tactics for the next four years,” the statement reads. “This will be the first national convention period for the large number of new members who’ve joined the CPUSA in recent years, members bringing their energy and questions to the struggle.”
Although the convention is still in the planning stage and a business agenda has not been published, the statement emphasizes several key issues crucial to the party, including securing a ceasefire in Gaza, addressing racially motivated violence against people of color, safeguarding public services from privatization, and advocating for universal access to housing, food, education, and healthcare, among other topics.
The party also encourages supporters to contribute to the convention by participating in planning discussions and events. Specifically, it invites members to assist the organization in defining tactical goals and strategic analyses that will ultimately be deliberated upon in June. The first pre-convention discussion period is scheduled for February 4, 2024, and will be accessible online. Convention planning activities will continue until the end of May.
Notably, the statement by the Communist Party USA makes no mention of endorsing or selecting a presidential ticket for the 2024 election. In 2021, the party announced its intention to resume running candidates in future elections, although it did not specify whether this would include presidential candidates.
