The Vermont Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party, formerly known as the Liberty Union Party until 2021, selected independent candidate Dr. Cornel West as its presidential nominee over the weekend.
According to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News, the Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party selected West as their presidential nominee on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Winger reports that the selection gives the West campaign ballot access in the state. However, the Ballot Access HQ map maintained by the West campaign indicates that he still needs Vermont electors.
It is also presumed that the party chose Dr. Melina Abdullah as West’s vice presidential running mate. Independent Political Report has reached out to the party to verify this selection.
The Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party was formerly known as the Liberty Union Party before changing its name due to the perceived right-wing associations with the term “Liberty.” Founded in 1970, it aimed to address societal militarization, environmental destruction, poverty, and contemporary issues of the time such as the Vietnam War. While known as the Liberty Union Party, it gave its presidential ballot line to Party for Socialism and Liberation nominee Gloria La Riva in both 2020 and 2016.
