Legal Marijuana NOW! Party of Nebraska Endorses Presidential Bid of Cornel West and Melina Abdullah

Independent candidate Dr. Cornel West announced over the weekend that he received the presidential nomination of the Legal Marijuana NOW! Party of Nebraska. The ballot-qualified minor party first expressed its support for West via social media earlier in June.

The release, published by the West campaign on Saturday, states that the Legal Marijuana NOW! Party of Nebraska initially endorsed West and his running mate, Dr. Melina Abdullah, at the party’s June 1 national convention. The campaign further mentions that the party’s decision to endorse the ticket was guided by Mark Elworth Jr., Chair of the Legal Marijuana NOW Party of Nebraska, and was approved with “unanimous consent” by the party leadership.

The West campaign additionally praised the Legal Marijuana NOW! Party of Nebraska for its selection of the West and Abdullah ticket, calling it a sign of the party’s commitment to “equality, racial justice, and environmental sustainability.”

It’s worth noting that the Legal Marijuana NOW! Party of Minnesota held its own nominating convention in July, where 30 delegates selected their own presidential ticket, separate from West and Abdullah. Information provided to Independent Political Report by Elworth following the Minnesota convention clarifies that the two organizations are distinct from each other, although Elworth adds that the Minnesota party allegedly claims the Nebraska party as part of its larger operations.

According to the West campaign’s ballot access map, it has secured ballot access in eight states with the addition of Nebraska, including Oregon, Alaska, Colorado, Utah, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Vermont. However, regarding North Carolina, the West campaign is currently being blocked by the North Carolina State Board of Elections, although the Board is expected to meet again this week. The campaign also states that it is awaiting certification in several more locations.
