Former presidential candidates Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party and Claudia De la Cruz of the Party for Socialism and Liberation are among the convenors of a planned Inauguration Day demonstration in Washington, D.C., next year.
Liberation News, the official newspaper of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, announced the protest this week. It stated that the event is scheduled to coincide with Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C., next month and will focus on “opposing Trump’s ultra-right, billionaire agenda.” In addition to the main demonstration, a series of state-specific gatherings will take place across the nation. Notably, the People’s Forum first publicized the event earlier this month following the election.
Although promotional materials indicate that the convenors are primarily organizations and advocacy groups—such as the People’s Forum, ANSWER, the Palestinian Youth Movement, Codepink, Union de Vecinos, and others—they also include individual organizers, including Jill Stein and Claudia De la Cruz, as well as labor organizer Chris Smalls and Rowan Blanchard.
“Instead of responding to the needs of the people, both the Democrats and the Republicans have moved further and further to the right,” stated the ANSWER coalition in the article published in Liberation News. “Trump’s agenda is the culmination of this right-ward spiral, and his administration will move to make major gains for the billionaire class at the expense of the millions of everyday people in the US and across the world.”
“But we can defeat the Trump program. Not by following the Democratic Party establishment, but by building a massive movement against the ruling class and the political system that gives everything to billionaires while impoverishing an ever larger section of the population,” the article continued.
It is not yet known what the demonstration will entail or if the convenors will formally address protesters, as organizers have not released an official agenda or list of speakers.
