The Libertarian National Committee will consider a motion related to the sale of the Libertarian Party’s Virginia headquarters at a special meeting next month. The party previously discussed using the space as a way to generate extra revenue last year.
According to a list of motions set for discussion at the LNC’s upcoming special meeting in March, members will discuss rescinding the Building Fund and authorizing the sale of the party’s headquarters at 1444 Duke Street in Alexandria. Notice for both items was given earlier this week, with the motions submitted by Andrew Watkins.
Former Chair Angela McArdle previously announced plans to rent out the Libertarian Party headquarters last year with then-Vice Chair Watkins as a way to generate additional revenue for fundraising efforts, membership card production, and other party projects. While McArdle also mentioned the possibility of selling the property outright, she described the idea as “logically challenging” at the time and noted that the party had other priorities.
“I understand that having a building within the beltway fit the needs and desires of previous LNCs with wanting to have lobbying efforts and so on to somehow inspire change within the federal government,” Watkins also stated at the time. “[…] The change we want to see will be obtained from the bottom up, not the top down, and we are already seeing that with many of our members putting pressure on state legislatures to pass Defend the Guard.”
Before that discussion, former LNC Operations Director Robert Kraus had recommended selling the building in an email to the LNC before departing the organization in 2022.
Beyond motions concerning party headquarters, the LNCs March meeting will also address Policy Manual changes and the appointment of members to the Convention Oversight, Advertising and Publication Review, and Employment Policy and Compensation Committees.
