Libertarian National Committee Votes to Appoint Adrian Malagon to At-Large Vacancy

A majority of the Libertarian National Committee has voted to appoint Adrian F Malagon to fill an open At-Large vacancy following Steven Nekhaila’s appointment as chair earlier this month.

The motion to appoint Malagon was introduced last week by Nekhaila and others, though only the chair was required to sponsor the motion. In making it, Nekhaila described Malagon as a “crucial part of my vision as Chair and the work needed to see this vision through.” While the appointment has not been officially announced, voting on the motion closed Sunday, with nine members in favor, four opposed, two choosing not to vote, and one abstaining.

According to information posted on the Libertarian National Committee Public Business List, only a simple majority was required to confirm Malagon’s appointment.

Malagon currently serves as the Region 4 Alternate on the Libertarian National Committee, a position he assumed following the 2024 National Convention. He was also briefly named pro tem secretary after the suspension of National Secretary Caryn Ann Harlos and during her subsequent appeal. Malagon has also previously held roles as an At-Large member and the Region 4 Representative.

Independent Political Report is unaware of any potential candidates to fill the Region 4 Alternate vacancy to be created following Malagon’s appointment. Region 4 encompasses the entire state of California, and the current Region Representative is Meredith Hays.

Editorial note: IPR later learned from a member of the Committee that a second motion had been planned to nominate Jacob Bradley of Texas for the position, in the event that the first motion to appoint Malagon failed. Since there were two distinct motions for the same role, they were handled in the order in which they were submitted. The specific co-sponsors of the Bradley motion were not shared.

Malagon’s a smart guy. Well, for someone still in the LP anyway. And certainly for a party functionary, and one who got elected to the LNC no less. Nonetheless, I worry that he might get tricked into letting himself be (ab)used.

Nekhaila’s whole ‘Malagon will be crucial to our schemes’ villain quote, and he and his cronies voting in favor of the appointment while more than half of the less unreliable characters voted against it, all absolutely reek of there being some rotten fish afoot in the state of Denmark… (Gosh I love mixed metaphors) It feels like Malagon is either compromised or being set up.

…Yet like a lamb to the slaughter, into the valley of the shadow of death, he sauntered… (Do lambs saunter? Or do they more amble? Or sashay?)
