The Green National Committee is currently considering whether the Green Party should endorse National Single Payer’s May 31 National Day of Action, an event aimed at mobilizing support for a universal, single-payer healthcare system.
The proposal was introduced on Monday by the party’s Steering Committee and is being managed on the floor by Joseph Naham. The Green National Committee will discuss the proposal until the end of the month, with voting scheduled for the first week of April. According to the National Committee vote tracker, a simple majority is required for passage.
National Single Payer is a nonprofit organization advocating for a comprehensive single-payer healthcare system in the United States. Its list of demands for the event outlines four key goals: recognition by the government that healthcare is a human right, the elimination of private health insurance and for-profit care delivery, the enactment of a national single-payer program, and the restructuring of the healthcare system to be “freed from corporate control.”
If the Green Party endorses the event, it will join other supporting organizations, including the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization, RootsAction, and the Movement to End Privatization of Medicare. As of now, no other political party has formally joined the coalition. The proposal also encourages state Green Parties and individual members to participate in the day of action as a further show of support.
In preparation for the event, National Single Payer will also host a webinar on March 26 to provide details on organizing efforts and how supporters can contribute. According to the proposal, Green National Committee members are invited to attend to learn more before casting their votes on the endorsement.

Fully nationalized health care would be better – not just single payer but single provider. Basic human needs – food, shelter, education, utilities, transportation, clothing and medicine – ought to be available to all and not for profit.
Difficult cases in the Canadian health care system do not appear to most Canadians to be an indictment of the entire system. They will blithely turn around and cite cases of Americans disadvantaged by their own system.

Ironically, probably the quickest way to get “single payer” (aka nationalized) health insurance today would be to annex Canada. The Canadians would probably demand it.
