The United States Transhumanist Party has endorsed independent candidate Timothy Grady in the race for governor of Ohio. Members of the party approved the endorsement in a majority vote this month, according to its national committee.
In a September 4 statement, Grady said he was honored to receive the support of the Transhumanist Party and that he and the organization hold similar views on how to use science and technology for public benefit. He praised Transhumanist leadership in addressing the real-time implications of emerging technologies, which he called “existential questions that demand leadership and foresight.”
“These are not challenges of some distant future but here and now, raising existential questions that demand leadership and foresight,” Grady added. “I look forward to working with the Transhumanist Party to fight for a better future for everyone.”
Transhumanist Party members formally voted to endorse the Grady campaign in an electronic ballot held between August 18 and September 1. The organization reported that 86 members participated in the vote. Of those, 66 supported the endorsement, six opposed it, and 14 abstained.
Grady, a graduate student and former Ohio Forward Party chair, launched his campaign in June. In a statement at the time, he referenced relationships he developed with a wide variety of political parties and independent groups across the state. In July, Grady named Army veteran Andrea Neutzling as his running mate. The campaign is now petitioning for ballot access.
The endorsement coincides with the party’s decision to enter into a political coalition with the United States Pirate Party, which it also announced as part of the statement. The coalition, named “All Hands for a Free Future,” follows several months of collaboration between the two organizations. It was first teased by the Pirate Party in early July, which then said that the effort was “all but official” pending ratification of the bylaws.
Speaking on the coalition, Transhumanist Party Chairman Gennady Stolyarov II said, “Joining forces with like-minded champions of individual liberty, technological progress, and universal abundance—while maintaining our distinctive political identities—is the way to effectively challenge the political duopoly in the United States and bring truly innovative policy solutions to the forefront of public discourse.”
Notably, the Pirate Party has also given its support to the Grady campaign, similarly praising him in an endorsement in August for his shared values with the organization.
