Libertarian Activist Developing Candidate Database for Party Leadership Elections

Thomas Rowlette, a member of the Libertarian Party of Missouri and amateur party historian, is developing an online database that will catalog information on candidates running for internal positions within the Libertarian Party, specifically those seeking national leadership roles.

Details in an email sent by Rowlette to former LNC treasurers, shared online October 2 by Third Party Watch, show that he is building a website modeled after Ballotpedia, a nonprofit encyclopedia of American elections and candidates. A URL for the site provided by Rowlette is lp-merit.com, which he said is expected to go live in about a month.

The Libertarian Party already maintains an internal archive called LPedia through its Historical Preservation Committee, which primarily focuses on meeting records, historical documentation, and prominent figures. Unlike that resource, Rowlette’s project is intended to track active officer candidates and provide materials related to internal elections.

Rowlette wrote that he is preparing a soft launch that will include different styles of candidate questionnaire prompts, with questions currently being developed. “Every candidate for the LNC or for the JC will be asked questions about their experience and qualifications for office,” Rowlette wrote. “There will be additional questions for some of the officers, including Treasurer.”

He added that he is also seeking input from former Libertarian Party treasurers to help shape the questions for that role.

“Having never been a treasurer myself above the county level, I’m not sure what additional questions to ask other than ‘Are you a CPA?'” he wrote. “I would like to get the input of as many former LP national Treasurers as I can about the questions that potential new treasurers should be asked, so any suggestions would be extremely welcome.”

Third Party Watch is owned and edited by George Phillies, a member of Independent Political Report’s editorial team. He was not involved in the preparation of this article.
