Libertarian Party Requests Proposals for 2028 National Convention

The Libertarian National Committee has opened the process for selecting a host city and venue for the 2028 Libertarian National Convention, soliciting member proposals this month. A tentative date of February 18–21 has been set for the event, though it remains subject to change.

Region 2 Representative Jonathan McGee first circulated a formal Request for Proposal to members on October 6, encouraging them to share the document widely. McGee, also a member of the Convention Committee, said he studied potential venue locations based on airfare, lodging, and taxes; however, the final choice would prioritize overall value, and proposals outside of his initial analysis would still be considered.

The document requests a venue capable of accommodating a ballroom of at least 30,000 square feet as well as a secondary space of 9,000 square feet for meals, additional rooms for breakout sessions, and an exhibit area for 50 booths. Peak lodging is expected at 400 rooms, with a total of 2,200 room nights over nine days, and room rates should remain “sharp” at or below $159 per night. It also stresses affordability in food and beverage, with a budget not exceeding $80,000, and includes a list of preferred concessions.

A draft schedule provides for a four-day event, including a “Day of Education” before formal convention business, the nomination of the party’s 2028 presidential ticket, internal officer elections, and post-event breakdown. Registration and setup for media, exhibits, and banquet facilities are expected to begin two days prior to the start of programming.

While the committee set February as the initial date, the schedule remains flexible. The document requests that proposals include two potential weekend options within the broader early February to late May window, excluding Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. It is also open to what it terms “atypical” non-weekend dates in the event such opportunities present a financial benefit.

The Libertarian Party has historically held its conventions on Memorial Day weekend, including the 2024, 2022, 2016, and 2010 events. Other common dates have been around Independence Day weekend. Its upcoming 2026 convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is similarly scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. Submissions for the 2028 event are due by November 30, 2025, with additional details here.

“Location suggestions: Someplace new, such as: Omaha, Houston, Kansas City, Charlotte, Nashville, Boston, Dallas?”

Omaha in February? If it’s gonna be that early, then we need Palm Springs or Phoenix to step up.
