Brian McWilliams has resigned from his position as communications director of the Libertarian National Committee, pointing to time demands associated with running his public relations agency. McWilliams has served in the role since 2023.
LNC Chair Evan McMahon notified members of the National Committee in a July 14 thread shared to the public Business List. In a statement included with McMahon’s message, McWilliams said the role had become “a bit too time consuming” alongside his business responsibilities and that he needed to turn his full attention to the continued growth of his agency.
McWilliams also said he would continue working through the end of the month and assist with any necessary transition.
“Though Brian and I have only worked together since I was elected Chair at the end of May, his work in that time has been stellar,” McMahon wrote. “He has been responsive, professional, and a steady hand on the Party’s public voice. I respect his decision to devote his full attention to the growth of his business, and I wish him every success in his ventures.”
McMahon said the LNC’s Employee Policy and Compensation Committee has been notified of the vacancy and will coordinate the hiring process under party rules. Staff are expected to send an email seeking applications for the communications director position later this week.
McWilliams began working with the national party in August 2023, when then-LNC Chair Angela McArdle announced him as a part-time communications contractor. At the time, McWilliams was introduced as an executive specializing in media relations, branding, messaging, media outreach, and crisis communications. In addition to his public relations agency, identified by his LinkedIn as Spelling Communications, he is also co-founder of the Lions of Liberty podcast network.
