U.S. Green Party Will Reaffiliate With Federation of Green Parties of the Americas

The Green Party of the United States has approved a proposal directing its International Committee to pursue reaffiliation with the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, placing the party back on a path toward full membership in the Global Greens.

Voting on the proposal closed this past weekend, with delegates to the Green National Committee adopting the measure in a 70–27 vote. Three delegates abstained. Opposition was mostly scattered, though all participating delegates from the Black Caucus, Lavender Caucus, and Youth Caucus voted against reaffiliation, as did those from the Nevada, New Mexico, and Washington state affiliates.

The proposal directs the International Committee to apply on behalf of the GPUS for affiliation with the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, also known as the Federación de Partidos Verdes de las Américas or FPVA. Once reaffiliated with the regional federation, the committee is also instructed to apply for full membership in the larger Global Greens organization.

The vote reverses a decision made by the Green National Committee in 2022, when delegates voted to withdraw from the FPVA following concerns over the U.S. organization’s relationship with the federation and what the International Committee at the time called a “right wing orientation” held by some other member parties. The FPVA also held a vote that saw the GPUS downgraded to observer status and lose its ability to vote on matters before the federation, leading the U.S. organization to formally break ties in a 56–37 vote with six abstentions.

The newly adopted proposal also rescinds the Green National Committee’s earlier 2019 decision to pursue affiliation with the São Paulo Forum, a separate coalition of left-wing parties based in the Americas. The International Committee states in its proposal that, despite several years passing since the earlier approval from delegates, the party’s affiliation with the forum “has still not occurred in practice.”

Moving forward, pursuing reaffiliation with the FPVA will require the Green National Committee to pay an annual membership fee of $200 for the FPVA and $1,000 for the Global Greens. Actual travel and accommodation costs for federation and Global Greens meetings would be budgeted by the party on a year-to-year basis, though the International Committee states that delegates have historically paid much of their own way and that it would prefer the national party eventually cover those expenses this time around.

The proposal also calls for three International Committee members to comprise the delegation to both the FPVA General Assemblies and Global Greens Congresses. Those delegates will then be responsible for monitoring business, reporting back any notable details, and maintaining communication between the party and the federation.
